One of the new features of WinXP is that it'll try to read audio CDs using digital playback instead of analog. I don't know if this is a factor, but you can try turning it off. Go to the Control panel and find the "Sounds and Audio Devices" panel. Now go to Hardware, find your CD-ROM drive and bring up properties. There should be a Properties tab which shows this feature... turn it off. See if that fixes it. If not, you may just have a bad CDROM drive. A new one doesn't cost a whole lot, I'm particularly fond of the Sony 52X drives, they are about $30 mail order but are only $39 at CompUSA. I have four of them in my various computers at home.
