It seems nice software, but it lacks in effects like transitions, etc, as well as titling (you have to import a BMP to act as a title page; it cannot either create titles on top of footage). One thing that sometimes bothers me about MS 'plan' to take over computing is that to obliterate competition they will come up with their own version of an App (a median player a la real and QuickTime, cd burning a la easy cd, movie maker a la imovie), but because they try to cover so much, at first none of the apps are worth much (explorer 1.0), I wish they will place more emphasis n quality, not on just covering the whole to make people switch. Anyone thinks they will release transitions for WMM?, it has all the elements of a very nice application, but a bit weak on the features side, even for a freebie, if MS wants people to seriously look at XP for their digital videos needs, they must emulate Apple and Imovie, MS should not let XP be lesser than OSX in the DV department, XP is too cool for that!

The problem then is that if they add too much to it they are going to have a lot of problems from companies complaining that they are taking away their business.

You guys should be thanking microsoft for being nice enough to include features such as windows movie maker. Microsoft has never said windows movie maker is a full featured product, it's just there for a beginer that just wants something easy and works. This is the target audience of windows xp home edition - home users and beginners. These people want stuff simple and easy. It's the same for the firewall and cd burning in winxp. Both work fine, its just very simple and little customizing. Microsoft has always said if you really want a full featured product, go out and buy one.

But before you say ms should include more options, consider the precedent. In windows 3.1 ms bundled a free antivirus which was a total disaster. it put ms into the business of viruses which ms is not experienced in, this led to many long support calls and unhappy customers. Or consider the tweakUI tool on the win95/98 cd. This tool was never supported, and it was just a value addon. However many idiots were locking themselves out of there pc, and of course ms would have to help these people, even if they used an unsupported tool. Another great point is internet connection sharing (ICS). In win98se/winme, this feature could be a headache. It originally was supposed to be easy, but if it broke it required a lot of work, which led to long calls and unhappy customers. The point is, if ms added advanced options, it would be more confuzing, and newbies would break there computer more easily requiring long support calls from microsoft. I for one am glad ms made this software so easy to use, it either works or doesnt work!

I agree with you Gosh, but my point is that if you are going to pout something like WMM as part of what makes the OS good for dealing with DV (WMM is one of MS top ten reasons to upgrade to XP on their site) then they should have equaled or top Apple.

I you tell me that I should fork over 80 dollars for a software than can only run on ONE computer, because among other things, lets me create home movies, make sure that app is up to the competition (titling, transitions) that would have not complicated things (Imovie is damm easy to use, I'll give that to Cupertino), if it was just a nice little app as an add on yes, but it is not just and add on, is one of the 10 top reasons why Microsoft thinks you should pay for an upgrade, at that level, I expect a damm complete software.
