First off you are right in wanting to start from scratch.
Installing XP "cleanly" is really easy. Basically you setup your computer to boot from the CD-Rom Drive (bios may need to be changed) pop in your XP disk and follow the directions on your screen. You will format your computer from within the XP Installation no need for fdisk or anything like that. I recommend you formatting your drive with NTFS. As far as backing up your files goes XP includes this awesome utility called files and settings transfer wizard that you can install on pretty much any Microsoft Operating system. Run that and select what you want to keep and it will grab all of your data for you and back it up to a location you specify. I may be making it sound complicated but it is really easy. Then after you finish installing XP run it again and voila all your stuff is back. |

Fault tolerance, speed (some will argue with me on this one), and security are the biggies. You know when you don't shutdown windows 98 right and you get the blue scandisk screen that comes up? Doesn't happen with NTFS. Its a journaling file system. I am not going to go into too many details but it is the superior to FAT/FAT32 in almost every way.
