Do the standards first:

Safe mode - press f8, and go into safe mode. Does it happen here? If yes, then it's OS corruption, or virus. If no, it's a driver or 3rd party software, you can use msconfig to narrow it down.

Does even viewer show anything? Right click my computer, left click manage, double click event viewer, double click on application or system. You might want to clear it, and reproduce the problem, then look at the event viewer.

Have you scanned for viruses recently? You can do so for free at housecall.antivirus.com

Do you have any scheduled tasks? Check the scheduler.

What about system restore, can you go back to a point when system worked fine?

What if you repair the OS? You do this by booting from cd, seleting new install, then pressing esc i believe to repair.
