First, could you provide a little more info:
1. What type of optical drive (i.e. DVD writer, external HD or DVD writer, etc)
2. Did you install something, or uninstall something? FWIW, some burner programs can cause ths.
And, no XP doesn't suck so bad. It's usually a PEBCAK error.

Tony -
I believe that Station Ripper is the problem. Before uninstalling it, try the following:
1. Go to download.com and download RegClean. It's a low level Registry fixer from Microsoft. Run that, reboot, and see if that fixes it. If so, live long and prosper
2. If not, try uninstalling Station Ripper, run RegClean, reboot and see if that takes care of it. If so, don't install Station Ripper.
3. If not, check Microsoft's support site - there were some registry fixes to address this type of stuff.
The last option is a clean install.
What's happened is that some program h@sscrewed up the registry entries for these devices. They probably show up in device manager with a !.
I'm not familiar with that mobo, but it's o.k. to leave fast boot on. Most systems today have it enabled w/o any problems.
No offense on the WinXP comment (I have to work with a Linux devotee). Most problems with WinXP aren't caused by Microsoft - they're caused by poorly coded 3rd party programs.

Put the WinXP CD in and reboot. At start-up the drive will recognize the CD and you'll see a line that says to press any key to enter setup. Go thru the screens and when you get to the option to install, hit ESC and delete the current partition, and do a complete install from there.
Once you get everything installed (i.e. everything that you know won't goof up the system), create a Restore point. That way, if something screws stuff up, you can go back to the restore point where you knew everything worked.

As Win2000 Pro and WinXP are built around the same kernel, it may do the same to Win2000 Pro. Good luck.

Don't panic (yet). Check the settings in your BIOS to make sure that the boot order is: CDROM first, Floppy second, and Hard Drive third.
FWIW, it isn't an XP/MS problem - it's bad coding on the part of the third party software mfgr. Trust me on that - I've had a couple of programs reak havoc on my systems.
BTW, MS ripped off Apple long ago with Windows 1.0 - we all remember how good that was.
Like you, I've been tempted to switch to a G5 - as long as there's an Apple 23" Flatpanel display attached to it...[emote|:D]
