If this is a clean install and it's failing during the first reboot, it looks like a caching problem. WHen you run winxp setup, it first buffers the files to the hard drive. So if it fails here, it's pointing to bad ram, bad level2 cache on the cpu, bad cdrom, bad hard drive.

Is this a burned copy or retail copy? If its burned get another copy, could be bad cd.

But why are you using smartdrv? THe xp cd is bootable, it should say press any key to boot from cd... when you start the pc, if not then check your bios boot order, or update your bios.

Since winme installs fine, install winme again. When you upgrade go to a command prompt and type this;

<cdrom drive letter>:\i386\winnt32.exe /makelocalsource

What this will do is start the upgrade, and copy the source files to your hard drive, then run setup from the hard drive. This is what i recommend.
