Disabling plug and play OS in the bios will disable detection of onboard devices such as sound card on motherboard. If that works you just need an updated bios. Check all your hardware at microsoft.com/hcl to make sure everything works in xp. Remember xp is not an update to win98, it's an update to windows 2000, which is totally different. You cant use device manager to disable onboard sound card.
