Good luck on this one! I have a 1 Ghz, 128K RAM PC with Win ME. Everytime I upgrade Internet Explorer from 5.5 to 6.0, I am unable to display pictures by right clicking on them and selecting "Save Picture As". I can save them, but when I try to display them I get the message "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported." I am able to right click on a picture, select Copy, open Paint (Start-Program-Accessories-Paint), select Paste, save it and have it display. It's just that after upgrading to IE 6.0 the "Save Picture As" function doesn't work. I have formatted my hard drive several times and reinstalled Windows ME with my computers Emergency Recovery CDs; this procedure includes IE 5.5. I then selectively reinstall programs, etc. Everything works properly until I upgrade to IE 6.0, and then I am unable to display pictures as previously detailed. This last time I ran the Emergency Recovery CDs, I stayed with IE 5.5 for over a month and experienced no problems displaying pictures by right clicking on them and selecting "Save Picture As". As soon as I downloaded/installed IE 6.0 and rebooted my computer and signed on to AOL, I tried to display a picture I was previously able to display by right clicking on it and selecting "Save Picture As", as previously mentioned, and encountered the problem again. Why is 6.0 causing this? Is there a compatibility issue? Has anyone else had this problem? How do I fix it? Or am I stuck with having to use Cut and Paste? If I am unable to resolve this problem here, can someone direct me to another user friendly forum that might? My Windows ME version is OEM so Microsoft won't help without $$$$. Pretty nice considering their IE is causing the problem; par for the course I guess. I hope someone can help. Some additional info. When I use the AOL browser and select "Save Picture As", I am given the choice of 2 extensions, either .art or .bmp. In either case, I CAN'T view the picture. However, if I chose .bmp and also name the file with a .bmp extension, as in picture.bmp, and then select "Save", I CAN view the picture. But, if I use the IE 6.0 browser and select "Save Picture As", I am given the choice of 2 extensions, either .jpg or .bmp. Notice the difference? In either case, I CAN view the picture. In conclusion, when using AOL and IE 6.0, I have lost the automatic feature of "Save Picture As". At a minimum, the name of the file must include a .bmp extension, something that wasn't neccesary before IE 6.0., or the picture won't display. Bob G.
