In win9x sometimes people would press cancel at startup avoiding the password screen. However when you upgrade that password is migrated too, and you cannot bypass the password screen in xp.

Try safe mode (restart, press f8). Login as administrator. If you can log in as admin, u can go to control panel > user accounts > and reset the pw of any other account.

Try common passwords like your name, family member, computer name, password, etc.

Did the xp setup finish? Sometimes the xp setup wont finish and will use a temp password. Boot from a boot disk and look at c:\windows\setupact.log, search for password. If it says a password try it.

If all that doesnt work reisntall windows (boot from xp cd, press enter, f8, r for repair). Once your in setup press shift + f10 for a command prompt. In that command prompt type this

net user yourusername password

this will reset your user account with what password you put.
