Hi all, any suggestions why my Windows XP Pro SP2 would reboot itself on boot? System is:
Intel D845WN mobo
ATI-based card
1gb ram
Seagate 120GB hd
System has been running Win2k for last 6 years with no problems, upgrade to XP Pro SP2 and nothing but reboot on boot problems. I obviously get in eventually, no need to go into Safe Mode, but it's a pain waiting for it to boot.
I get NO error messages at all, the progress bar just pauses and then, pow, reboot and the cycle starts again [emote|:-(]
I even used the XP boot menu to stop automatic reboot on error, and still received no error message - grrr!
Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Mike K.

Chances are that there is something that conflicts with the installation (older antivirus, system utility, or video or soundcard driver). It's always best to do a clean install (after you back up your data first).

@JediMaster: um, this *is* after a clean install [emote|:-(] I wiped the drive, formatted it, checked it, then install a fresh version of WinXP Pro. That's when all the random reboots on boot started happening....
Edit: Hmmm, maybe it started happening after I installed IE 7.0... Grrr. I'll try Ragul's suggestion first, then go back to a new install and not install IE 7.0 and see if that's the issue...
Ta,
Mike K.

IE 7 wouldn't cause this. What antivirus and other system utilities have you installed? Also, what loads from the Startup folder?

I have AVG AntiVirus (free 'cos I'm cheap), and I'll check what runs from the StartUp folder.
However, I would like to point out that I don't even get to the Welcome / log on screen - the pc reboots whist it's on the Win XP starting up screen, with the progress bar...

Mike K.

And so it did [emote|:)]
I removed the startup gubbins and non-windows services and the pc booted a fair few times (10+) without problems. On a hunch, I uninstalled AVG Free and set the pc back to normal boot. Again, it booted fine on multiple occasions. I've now installed Avast! Home for my virus protection, so fingers crossed I won't have this issue any more.
Thanks for your help!
Kind regards,
Mike K.

Arsing hell! Still rebooting! I had a bit of an oddity in my Startup tab in msconfig, so I've disabled it, and so far I've rebooted a few times and it's ok...
Pic of current Startup in msconfig - any ideas what the blank entry is?

Ah, bugger it! Now with everything unchecked for startup and services, I'm still having a reboot during boot - sometimes it doesn't even get to the windows startup screen.
I guess it's a hardware issue, but what? Grrrr...
Thanks anyway,
Mike K.

Take it into a shop to have it checked. My first guess is the power supply. Beyond that, it'll take a good tech to figure this one out.

Thanks Jedi Master, I reckon that is my next port of call... Interesting you mention the power suplpy - I'm guessing here, and will ably demonstrate my lack of knowledge between hardware and software, but would Windows XP require more juice, i.e. a 400w supply?
As I've mentioned earlier, the whole pc ran Windows 2000 for six years without a fault of this magnitude, all this has only happened after installing XP Service Pack 2.
As always, thanks for everyone's help [emote|:-)]

Nope - WinXP doesn't require more juice. Reboot issues are usually caused by one of two factors:
1. Software - some programs and games can be very processor/system intensive (i.e. using 100% of the processor and requiring a high end graphics card). If there's a hardware inadequacy, the system might reboot.
2. Hardware - more likely it's a hardware issue. Rebooting issues are oft times traced to a failing power supply, or video RAM that's going out (had this happen before)

Hmmm, ok then:
Point 1, software: would WindowsXP (on boot) require a high-end grfx card? It finds it ok once WinXP boots...
Point 2, hardware: once again, the video card could be an issue - how can I check the power supply, short of swapping it out?
Ta again,
Mike K.

1. No, XP doesn't require a high end graphics card.
2. Take it to a computer store or reputable shop to have it tested

Ok, well the shop had it boot with "no problems" 60+ times. I go to collect it, the guy at the the counter plugs it in, it boots... and then reboots! Feeling vindicated, I said I'd leave it with them, but the chap was convinced it was the hard drive bearings on the way out.
Feeling a bit dubious, I bought a new drive and installed XP on it Sunday night, all seemed fine. Monday morning, powered it up - boot, reboot, boot, reboot on the new drive.
So, it's definitely not the power supply from the mains, it's not the hard drive, it's not software (clean install, nothing added, and it still reboots). Could it be the PSU? I find it hard to believe it's memory, it might be my video card, my monitor is down as Plug and Play - I'm running out of things to try.
There is a soft whirring noise on boot (like a cd being in a drive) which the chap at the shop thought was the bearings on the drive. However, once Windows XP boots, it's fine and dandy and works perfectly, with no lockups / freezes / BSODs etc.
Any thoughts?
Ta all,
Mike K.

Gah! Boot, reboot, boot, reboot loop is back this morning!!!
Interestingly enough, the pc didn't even make it to the Windows XP startup screen before rebooting this time, which now moves the problem away from XP and back into hardware [emote|:(]
I plan to check my HDD using SeaTools and the memory by memtest86 and see what that comes back with.
Kind regards,
Mike K.
