I have a Toshiba Sattelite A65 laptop running Widows XP SP2 with a cd/rw dvd/r drive (TEAC DW-224E-W). The drive is no longer recognized. In device manager, I have an exclamation point next to this drive. In the properties area for this drive, I receive this message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I tried uninstalling the cd drive from device manager and restarting several times. The status remains the same. When I try to update the driver, it tells me the wizard cannot find a better match. I found the .exe file for this driver online and downloaded it (WinDVDPatchEnu). When I try to run it, the Setup begins, then I receive this message: "The WinDVD Patch was unable to locate your WinDVD installation. Setup will now terminate". I ran regedit, exported the key to a savedkey file, then tried to delete the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Cl@ss\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]. It will not allow the deletion. I have backed up the entire hard drive to an external hard drive, and am prepared to reinstall the entire operating system via installation CD, if necessary. However, without the drive being recognized, I have no way to reboot with the CD. Please help!
