until recently i had a well working version of msn messenger. then i decided to update, and now i cant make it work... i get the following popup during msn-startup: The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "livemess.msi" in the box below. i guess i have to find the file, "livemess.msi" somewhere. but does anyone know where? cant find it with google.... thank you for any help you can give. -martin

Even when i uninstalled msn, and then tried to install an older version, the update process starts automaticaly. and when i click cancel in the update window, it restarts in a second... it has to be some other program that starts the upgrade, that is not connected directly to the msn, cause then it would probably have dissapeared when uninstalling....

If you're looking for the file on your computer, check Start > Search > Files and folders, then punch in the data. But if it's on the web. Google "What is XXXXX" The x's representing the file or "whatever" you want to find. ---------------------------------------------- E-Mail me any time ANY TIME. I DON'T SLEEP. About a virus, malware, backdoor, trojan, keylogged ect, and i'll fix you up right for free.

Same problem on my home pc... unable to connect with my (old??) 8.0 msn ver without an upgrade... Unabmle to install the last one, because missing "livemess.msi" and there is NO file with this name on the whole computer (I searched, probably erased in the temp folder...) If you can revert to the "old working one" (restore) AND THEN: CLose Msn mess if it's auto load, go to .\program files .\msn messenger (where is the "exe file": msnmsgr.exe) click right on msnmsgr.exe properties compatibility CHECK! "windows 2000" apply restart msn, and then you can connect again.... If somebody has a way to umpgrade without this "livemess.msi" error... Thanks

By chance, is your computer on a network (i.e. Win2000/Win2003 Server network)? A quick Google indicated that the problem is associated with administrative rights - i.e. the user doesn't have the correct rights to install a particular application. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Thats exactly what my puter is telling me when I wish to install the new messenger. Its telling me: "You do not have the permissions required to install WLMessenger etc...!!" I'm not sure what you mean by 'network.' My pc is not linked to any server, and all admin rights seem to be assigned to me. Please help Jedi Master.. I need the Force on my side!!!

Do you have multiple user accounts set up on your computer? To double check, go under Control Panel/Users and check. If so, this will also tell you if your account is truely an admin account. Also, what version of Windows are you running, and what security software do you have installed? ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Hi Jedi, thanks for your reply.. I checked the accounts and theres only two: computer admin which is me and a guest account which is turned off. I'm running Win XP and my security software is 'Blueyonder PC Guard' which hasnt presented any problems in the past! :/ Regards, V..

I did a quick Google, and there were a number of posts of problems associated with 'Blueyonder PC Guard'. My take would be to uninstall this (a couple of posts said to boot into Safe Mode and uninstall it from there). From there, reboot and try to install Messenger from there. I'm finding that a lot of "off brand" antivirus (anti-whatever) products tend to trash your system rather than be of any benefit. Stick with known products - NOTE - Avoid Symantec at all costs. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Check with your school IT department to see if they have certain sites and Messenger blocked. If they do, there really isn't a workaround. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Just to point out something i remembered: When i was asked to hit 'run' or 'dont run' when installing i hit 'dont run' as i thought this was going to start the program :/ hope this has'nt srewed up the matter in any way regards, V.C.

First, don't blame MSN for the damage that PC Guard did. Second, which program are you referring to when you said "asked to hit 'run' or 'dont run' when installing"? ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Ok!.. i was wrong to throw the blame at msn without fully understanding the source of the matter.. However, PC Guard has caused me not even a stabble of a problem ever. And in the advent of trying to install the said update (which has caused quite a few problems elswhere and hasnt been as smooth a transition as it could've) i feel i could be forgiving!?.. The program that asked to hit 'run' / 'dont run' during installation is 'MSN MEssenger!' Regards.. V.C.

When you choose "don't run" on Messenger, that's the reason it didn't install. You'll have to choose Run to install it. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

It wont allow me to get to that point when installing, it tells me i dont have 'the required permissions' very early in the installation stage. :? regards. V.C.

I accepted to install a new version of MSN on the installed old version openning. I downloaded the new version installation file but a problem may have occurred that now neither the old version nor the new one is functioning. Each time I try to open the old version or run the new version installation file I receive an error message that states: "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install" It seems that I need a type of MSN installation cleanning tool or something of the genre. I need help to solve this problem. Could anybody provide it? Thank you, Ivo

I solved the problem with the tips given at: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/546316-xp-home-error-1500-another.html The problem, in reality, had nothing to do with the MSN installation. It was a previous faulty installation that was causing the problem. I cleanned the faulty installation and succeeded installing MSN new version. Best regards, Ivo.
