I'm using an E-Machines T1220 purchased August 2002. It has never given me problems until 1 week ago. It began restarting often and freezing too. I removed the side panel and cleaned the pc of any dust. This included inside the PSU too. I would unplug every thing that wasn't originally included with the PC and it would boot up fine some times and other times not. So after about a week I obtained another hdd thinking it might of been this. But I still had problems installing XP using the restore CD for the T1220. I finally got XP installed and began updating. After installing all the updates and restarting the PC didn't detect my LinkSys ethernet card. So I performed a system restore. When the PC is running a program and I began running other programs the system may freeze. Some times the screen will flash once and that's when it's frozen. There was a good amount of dust build up inside the case and on the fan above the heat sink when I first opened it. I'm not sure how to remove the heat sink to remove any dust that may be beneath the heat sink. So today I'm going to try buying a can of air. I have considered installing a different operating system, but XP has never given me problems. And I believe the problem has a lot to deal with dust. I know dust on the connectors can cause problems. If someone can help me I'd really appreciate it because this is just so irritating.

This sounds more of a hardware issue. I'm leaning more towards a motherboard issue as you indicated the Linksys ethernet card wasn't being recognized. Dust too can cause problems. Canned air or a gentle vacumn can help, but be very careful. Well the trouble began around a week ago after removing 2 malware detected during a scan by Ad-Aware. I removed these and it w@ssoon after when I began experiencing the problem. Perhaps it's just a coincidence but I don' know..

If you did a clean install of WinXP, and the problem persists, then, again, I'm still thinking that it's a hardware related issue. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100

Ok this is strange but in a good way. Things were running slow so I re-installed XP several minutes ago. I have installed my Audigy LS sound card, downloaded & installed Comodo Firewall and right now I'm downloading Comodo Anti-Virus. The Windows XP setup went just fine. After that however when normally the desktop starts up the system did restart but other than that I have not had one single freeze or restart at all. I did clean beneath the heatsink slightly and I didn't think it would help at all. But who knows, perhaps it did. Now I don't know if malware did some thing to my bios, cmos or what ever. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'm not taking any risks this time around. And just to be on the safe side I'v already looked at New Egg's website for some PC 133 SDRAM to upgrade to 512 from 128. And I'm considering a new PSU as well. If it runs fine the rest of the evening and tomorrow I guess I can then breathe a sigh of relief. This PC was a birthday gift from my parents back in 2002 so even though it's got some age to it I want to take good care of it and not get rid of it just yet.
