| Did this happen during an installation of WinXP? If so, then your motherboard probably requires a 3rd party driver for the HD. During the initial setup, you'll see a text line saying to press F2 to install any 3rd party drivers. This is where you'd install the driver for the HD controller. | What AV are you running? If you visited a website that installed malicious code (i.e. virus/malware), that could have corrupted the OS. | If you're going to do a reinstallation, put in your WinXP CD and reboot the PC. As it starts, you'll see a text line that says press any key to enter setup. Do that. Follow the on-screen prompts. You'll be given the option to install WinXP on the same partition (If I recall, you'll press the ESC key, then follow the prompts to delete the current partition, and have WinXP reformat and reinstall). Reinstall WinXP, run the updates and reinstall your applications. Make sure that you also install a reliable antivirus.
