Windows NT, 2K, and XP are built on the NT kernel which is a full 32-bit protected memory preemptive-multitasking kernel.
Windows 95/98/ME are pseudo 32-bit (they still have some legacy code) and are not fully protected memory. What does this all mean? It means Windows NT/2k/XP are more Unix-like in their stability, security, and control, whereas Win95/98/ME are more DOS-like. Ever notice how a single program can completely hose 95 or 98 or ME? There is none of that in NT/2K/XP. You can isolate a process and kill it. You can see the FULL process list in NT/2K/XP (heretofor just called XP) whereas you only see a small tiny list in 95/98/ME (heretofor called ME). XP was a complete rewrite from the old DOS 16-bit legacy that stuck around in 95/98/ME. ME has much less of it than 95 and 98 did, but it's still there. The only thing holding back NT and 2K was that it had poor support for old DOS and early Windows games. XP has much better support for old games. XP was designed to finally merge the stability and security of NT/2K with the program compatibility of 95/98/ME. If you want a good, stable, compatible, quick OS, go XP. If you want a buggy, crashy, unsecure OS, go ME. |
