Hello,
I'm new to this forum, I'm hoping someone h@ssome ideas or suggestions on a problem I've run into.
I have a user that is running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Optiplex 745. Whenever he tries to open a document, or create a new document the system hangs for several minutes. He can eventually get in if he waits it out but it's very frustrating.
It happens no matter what the method of opening is. If you right click on the desktop, @ssoon as the mouse touches the "new" option, the system will hang trying to open the next drop down box. If you try to click "file" from the tools menu and "open" or "new" it hangs.
This happens regardless of whether you are trying to access something across the network or on the hard drive.
I go to task manager but the system is sitting at 99% idle with task manager using 1%. I have run disk defrag, msconfig, and checked to make sure his virus protection is up to date and running. I can't find anything out of the ordinary. The only errors in the system event logs is a generic "application hang" error. Not even this error is generated on every occurance.
Has anyone run into this problem before, or have any suggestions??
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Check for spyware or malware (Spybot or some other freebee). Also, prior to this happening, did he install something or download something?

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I believe he has run ad-aware but I will verify. This is a new pc that he has had for about 3 weeks. He doesn't have sufficient privileges to install anything. All installs are handled by the IT Dept.

I was able to trace the problem to the network connection. If I pulled the network cable out, everything worked fine. Once I put the cable back in, it would lock up. The network card was 1GB - I set it to 100MB full and it made no difference. I changed it back to 1GB and everything started working! Not sure what the exact problem was, but it's fixed so the user's happy which makes me happy! Thanks for your help.
