Im new here and I have a bit of a problem that has been buggin me for a while. I have 3 PC's. 2 of them are running windows XP pro. They are both networked via a switch. I have just built a PC with windows server 2003 on it, I plugged that PC into my switch but i cannot get it to ping the xp pcs or them to ping the sever. the clients can ping each other ok. am only a student learing so all help would be good step by step thanks everyone.

Are you running the computers as a workgroup? If so, make sure that they all have the same workgroup name.
Otherwise, you can set the server up as a true server, and promote it to a domain controller (don't forget to configure it as a DNS and DHCP server too).

How have you set up your IP addresses? Do you already have DHCP running, say through a router? Have you got link lights showing with all of your connections? Are you pinging by IP address, or NetBIOS name?
Basically, the Jedi is right. If you're going to have this type of configuration, you should run dcpromo on the 2k3 box, configure DNS during dcpromo, and if you have no DHCP running already, install it and activate it on the 2k3 box.
Then configure the xp boxes to use DHCP to obtain IP addresses.

Make sure the 3 machines all have the same subnets and default gateway.
Then turn off the firewalls off the XP computers and see if this makes a difference.
