A few days ago, a friend of mine sent me something saying: Did you see this picture of Paris Hilton. With a .zip file of the name: imgac17. Something similiar to that. Being my curious and stupid self, I accepeted the file. I w@sso stupid i even unzipped the file, and clicking into it's contents. What happened after that I cannot exactly remember. But I soon figured out that it was a virus which sends the same thing to everyone else on my contact list. I deleted the .zip file and everything related to it imediately, also doing a NOD anti virus scan. Nothing came up on the scan.. This stupid virus thing also freezes my MSN, popping up random convos every few seconds, I can't even move my mouse when this happens. It usually lasts a few minutes then everything goes back to normal. But usually I just shut down everything out of exasperation. Luckily, the virus seems to only affect my MSN, but I have heard it can grow trojan horses and affect the whole computer. I have already discovered the my computer has been slowing down during the past few days.
I'm not that good with computers so please, HELP!!!
Thanks!!

i opened one of those files a about 5 hours ago. i wasnt aware of the virus before so i tried to open it with adobe and it proceeded to send the virus to my msn contacts. thankfully only two were online at the time. i then deleted the file and uninstalled msn on my computer. We have norton anti virus but it hasnt even alerted us. So far nothing seems to be wrong with my computer and its showing none of the signs described in other boards such as loss of speaker sound etc etc. maybe i should add that i was not on the admin account. I was wondering if i contracted the virus at all?

I woke up yesterday, my comp was royally f***ed. why? I really don't friggen know. but it's sending random messages to people on my contact list, containing zip files, saying things like, I just found your picture on facebook, or, hey. check out my photo's before I upload them to facebook. and others like, hey check out these photos of my baby cousin isn't she chubby.
I'm not freakin genius, or computer scientist. but I would like to know how to fix it. becaue I really don't know what I am doing. I don't want to continuously frigg my comp up, by trying to delete things that may not need to be deleted. I'm skreewwwwwwwwed. someone help me. please

Sounds like you've been infected with one of the MSN messenger worms or viruses. What antivirus are you using?
As far as fixing it, my research indicates that the best way is to do a total reformat (make sure you back up your data first). and reinstall. Yeah, it's a pain, but it takes care of the problem.
And, important safety tip - make sure you use a good security suite to protect yourself.

DO NOT FORMAT YOUR COMPUTER, there is no need to, the virus is easily removable, all you need to is go in to task list (Ctrl+Alt+Del > task list) find a .exe that is 10 characters long (the letters seem to be random), end it, then go to c:\windows\system32 and delete the program, then make sure you have removed the zip, and you'll be virus free.

Thanks Ray. FWIW, all of the research that I did on this particular virus that comes over Windows Messenger indicated that many people had to resort to a full refomat/reinstall.

I should point out, that unless you know what you are doing, you could do serious damage following my advice.
Jedi, I had the same problem, I couldn't find any sites that didn't say format, and reinstall.
EDIT: Also, this program uses an exploit in Outlook express (possibly the normal version as well) to spam accounts, however these aren't proper accounts, they are 1 hour/1 day accounts.

Ok, the fix for this is REASONABLY simple if you know anything about using pc's
Here goes
First, press Alt + ctrl + del, open task manager, click the "processes" tab, find a program that shouldnt be running (if you dont know what should/shouldnt be running there are sites that can tell you)
Now, that will stop the virus BUT not get rid of it.
Next, click start, then "Run" (windows xp, dont know about vista)
type "msconfig" (without the " of course) and click OK
Click the "StartUp" tab
Again, scroll through the list of ticked files and untick any that should not be running at start up (again, this is some randomly named file like agedjgs.exe that will be in the System32 directory)
Next click the "Services" tab, sort this list by Manufacturer (click the word manufacturer on the top bar in the middle)
Scroll through this list and find a file that has either no manufacturer or a fake one (hopefully u know what you have installed on your pc)
Now, go to the file that you unticked in the startup tab (c:/windows/system32 or where ever) and delete the file, then reboot and it will be fixed
IF you do stuff up anywhere along the way, reboot into safe mode (this stops that msconfig batch from running) then you can reset it up.
I know all this seems complicated, but with a bit of research and time, this is a good way to get rid of almost any virus ESPECIALLY this one
If none of that works, either google the trojan/virus for a bugfix OR (DANGER) run a registry cleaner because it may be in the registry to reboot/reinstall itself.
Hope that helped

I can't even access the task manager!
When I press Ctrl + Alt + Del the task manager doesn't open up and instead an error msg pops out: the task manager service has been disabled on your computer.
Also, I have noticed that I suddenly do not have the "Run" option in my start menu!!!
Few days ago, I found on the net that I have to delete a file from C:/Windows/System32 [but I forgot what was that file called]; anywho, I deleted it and emptied my recycle bin! [yeah, I know! LOL!]
This virus is seriously bugging me now!
Any suggestions?

At this point, back up your data delete the partition and do a clean install. And next time, use a good antivirus (i.e. NOT Norton or McAfee). I'd suggest something like Kaspersky or NOD32.
