So I hooked a router between a xp box and vista box. Disabled all firewalls etc, setup accounts ( admins) and I can see fine into the vista box however I can not log into the xp box. When it prompts for a user name and pass word I am denied. When I get prompted for login on vista I login fine. So where have I gone wrong? Why does it only work 1 way?

Are you trying to access resources (i.e. My Documents, etc) on the XP box from your Vista box? If so, make sure that you've enabled file and print sharing on the XP box, and specifically create a share on those folders or printers that you want to access.

Yes the folders are shared, the original idea was to share the printer and dedicated folder on the xp box however I can not figure out where Ive gone wrong. This must be somthing simple I am missing. I can ping the machine but not login. Why would I not be able to login?
Thanks

Tough one - from your Vista computer, you can "see" the XP machine under the Network, correct?
When you start up your XP machine, do you have to enter in a login and password? Also, which version of XP and which version of Vista are installed (i.e. WinXP Pro and Vista Business, or ??)
Lastly, what security suite (i.e. McAfee, OneCare, SomeAntics/Norton stuff) are you using? FWIW, OneCare has a "hidden" setting that disables file and print sharing, even if you enabled it elsewhere.

If you're the only user on both systems, make sure that there's only on User account on each, and clear the password on both (go to the User account and change the password - type in the old, and for the new, leave it blank). See if that works to clear up the issue.

The best way is to use a router. Check with your ISP as to any specific setup requirements for your modem to utilize a router (some ISP's identify you through the MAC address of your primary computer, and you may need to clone the MAC address on the router).
