| Hi, I'm having a load of problems with XP today. I'm getting the error: STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X00000000, OXF6F6CB5C, 0X00000000) I'll document everything i've done today/ I needed new ram - so got 1gb ram (2 x 512mb) - this was specific for the machine and worked fine. I then decided to install Zone alarm and then do anti-virus and anti-spy ware apart from a few findings, all was ok. I then decided to update windows - i updated to SP2 (didnt have that before i dont think) and again this worked ok. But then i thought whilst im at it, i'll do the highly recommended updates - all 52 of them. [b]big mistake!!![/b] . It got to the point of installing IE7 and then had to do a restart - upon restart it gets all the way to windows ( but not to the point of seeing a desktop of anything),and then it comes up with an error and then restarts. It does this over and over again. I went in to windows at start up and did F8, to stop the auto restart and read the fault. I've tried all safe mode, command prompt mode, network mode, last known mode and all dont work. I even went back to my slow 256MB memory of the morning but still it doesnt work. What should i do? I'm gonna find a blank cd and run that memory text thing from windows. Is the notebook a gonna? Even though its messed up, can i get a notebook harddrive case and still see my information? Help is really needed. Thanks Fuzz |

| The stop error is related to the RAM (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315335). Chances are that at least one chip on the RAM is bad. You didn't indicate where you purchased it - is it from a reputable mfgr? Anyway, take it back and get RAM made by Crucial, Kingston, or another reputable mfgr. As to whether your install of WinXP is hosed or not, that's hard to tell. One thing I'd recommend doing first is creating a slipstream of WinXP and SP2 (http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp). You might also want to download the install file for IE7 and install that after reinstallin WinXP SP2 slipstreamed.
