I obtained a used Compaq that blew my PC specs away & CLLEEEAAANNEd up the virus corrupted, out of control mess... deleting most everything but Windows... working all of the way down to 1 last problem... (which then led to additional concerns about the state of XP, listed below, as no recovery disk is available). -In Windows Explorer I found a folder w/ name of previous owner---"Tony," & was warned it "can't be renamed or moved" as it is "a system folder required for windows to run properly." U see my problem. (Again, I'm deleting everything but Windows, so I don't care if I lose anything but Windows). Additional accompanying annoyances/ info: -Any program I attempt to install seeks to load, by default, into the annoying Tony folder. -Additional crazy stuff seems to occur hand in hand with this issue. I compared Windows Explorer for this Compaq with my old pc. Under Documts & Settings on old pc, any user acct I create is also given a folder here, in addition to the "All Users" folder. But on the Compaq... even though I created a new user acct in my name, it didn't put a folder in "Documents & Settings." It sticks w/ "All Users" & "Tony" only... I see a folder w/ my name elsewhere, but not under "Documents & Settings" location, as on my old PC. This makes me wonder if this XP is more messed up than I realize & if this can be fixed? -Another related, crazy observation. During the process of cleaning up this PC... preparing to Nrton Ghost it... so I'll finally have a recovery CD, (albeit imperfect one).... I've needed to install some things temporarily & create some temp files. Some of these additions went into the Tony folder, under Docs & Settings. Some went to All Users.... ???? This seems screwy/ arbitrary. -Yet, this XP, overall, seems to handle everything... connecting to net when I set up DSL.... installing programs like Adobe reader... running games fine... playing cds over sound system, accepting driver updates, etc, etc. It even let me finally use my printer today for tons of printing my old PC was not allowing, giving me some faith in this PC /XP I've been working on so long. So, I seek advice... Either: 1. Is there a way around the block of changing the name of the folder... such as with editing the registry? & will such a fix solve the accompanying issues, described above? 2. Does it sound like I can salvage this XP on the Compaq? I do have a retail XP cd... which is the XP I installed on tower I'm now retiring. However, I decided to keep the XP on it, if possible... to use the tower as network source for backup/Ghost images of the Compaq I'm fixing... & to keep it ready to go as emergency tower, in case ever have trouble w/ the Compaq that I want to use as primary PC.... (I decided against using both hard drives in main, primary Compaq tower... as I don't want to fire up both drives every time I fire up PC, since one drive is old... It seems best to just use it on the backup/ emergency tower once per week).... Thus, since I'm retiring the tower, I won't exactly be really using the XP on it (as a separate PC), but only mapping a partition of it's drive, only for backups of main, Compaq PC. I will only use that old tower/ XP if my main, Compaq one ever gives out.... but then I wouldn't be using XP on the Compaq, if it was broken down, (so I wouldn't ever be using XP on both towers at the same time, as separate PCs). Plus, I connected the 2 towers with KVM switch... running them as only ONE computer/ ONE workstation... so what I'm getting at... is that I'm wonderng if, in this case, as described, I could / should just reinstall windows on the Compaq I'm trying to fix, using my retail CD. Another option is that I could learn Ubuntu (which I downloaded) & put that on the retired tower... & use my fresh XP CD install on the Compaq I'm trying to fix.... (But I hoped to take the next year to learn Ubuntu..

If I understand this correctly, it sounds like there is only one account name on this computer - "Tony". If you go to the Control Panel, and then Users, check to see if this is the only account there. If it is, you'll need to create another account with Administrator rights under your name, or whatever name you chose. Once you do that, log in under the new account, and then delete the "Tony" account in Control Panel/Users. This should give you the option to also delete the folder under Documents and Settings. As to salvaging WinXP, given that this is a computer that has had virus (and unkknown other problems) I personally would NOT recommend using Norton Ghost to create a backup of it. If it were me, I'd do a clean install of XP (i.e. delete the partition and allow XP to reformat the hard drive). ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
