To make a Looooong, Looooooooooong story short, I would like to know if anyone knows about an alternative program for connecting to a local network wireless-ly, because I know that if I had that, I could totally connect to my network! ^_^ By alternative, I mean as an alternative to Vista's standard connect to network program, which broke. Trust me, its broke. Don't ask. I know this kind of program is out there, because I've used them before, I know my friend has one that came with his wireless adapter, and I know there was one that came with this network management software my dad used to use. And if you kind knowledgeable souls could point one out for me I would be eternally grateful. =D So in conclusion, if any of yall know about where I could find this type of thing, I won't have to connect through an ethernet cable, and I can do laptop things from my bed! or maybe even my lap! ---------------------------------------------- Thanks in advance! ^_^

First, when you say that it's "broke", can you be specific? Wireless connectivity issues are often related to security that's enabled on the wireless router. Specifically, if the router enables MAC filtering, requires the use of a password/pass phrase because of the security/encryption protocal used, that could cause you to be unable to complete the connection to the network. If the wireless network shows up (either by clicking on the wireles icon in the taskbar or Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center/Connect to a Network), then Vista's standard connection isn't "broke". If a wireless network employs any type of security, without having the password, you'll be unable to connect. FWIW, if you're thinking of trying to hack into a wireless network, don't. There are severe federal penalties for doing this. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Well, what happened is that the Sl UI Notification service isn't working, which is wierd, because I have no idea how such a thing could break. Apparently it's the file that Microsoft uses to validate Vista as geniune. I didn't touch it or anything, I swear! But now almost everything in the control panel won't work. I'm going to get help from Microsoft or my OEM one of these days, but for now I just want to see if using an alternative program will work. The router is fine, the adapter is fine, the security is fine, I don't care about hacking at all, I just like being connected to the internet without wires, which is why I bought a laptop in the first place =P Plugging into a network with an ethernet cable when you're on a laptop... its pretty lame ---------------------------------------------- Thanks in advance! ^_^

If almost everything in Control Panel won't work, it sounds more like you have a virus or something. What antivirus are you running? Personally, I'd recommend that you back up all your data and do a complete clean install. It sounds like a virus has infected your laptop and mesing stuff up. As to antivirus recommendations, Kaspersky. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
