Linksys WRT54g v3 won't connect to internet

I've been having this problem for the past couple years. My router will work fine unless it loses power (power outage or the router is unplugged). Once it's lost power, nothing I can do will make it work again. The only solution I've found is to leave it unplugged for approximately 8 hours. After that, it hooks up and works fine.
Some details: computers will connect to the router wired or wirelessly and can communicate with eachother over the network but none can get internet access.
I've tried doing factory resets, upgrading to the latest firmware and then upgrading to the DD-WRT firmware: none of these fix the problem: it still has to be unplugged for hours before it'll work again.
I can pull up the modem's webpage (192.168.100.1) and see it's signal strength and whatnot, but can't get to the internet.
I've tried the more obvious solutions such as resetting the modem and renewing the router's dhcp license from comcast. I've hooked my computer directly to the modem and gotten internet, so it's not the modem causing it.
I'm a comcast technician and can fix most internet problems I come across.... except problems with a wrt54g v3. While working for comcast, I've come across customers' wrt54g v3's that seemed to have the same problem as mine (didn't have time to wait around for 8 hours to see if that got theirs working, so I'm not positive it was the same problem).
Any ideas why this could be happening? Is there a battery (cmos) in there that has to run out before it'll work again? If so, what setting could possibly be stored that would prevent internet access?

First, check to see if there's a firmware update from Linksys for the router. I had the same router (ver. 5) and had a similar issue that a firmware update fixed.
Beyond that, if the router has gone through power outages, there's a good chance that it may have been damaged by "dirty power" (power spikes/drops). If you wind up replacing it, connect it, along with your computer and all other main peripherals to a UPS.

Thanks for the reply. When I noticed that the last activity in this forum was two months ago, I wasn't expecting a response very quickly.
I did try upgrading to the latest official firmware, and then I upgraded to a DD-WRT firmware (which is pretty cool). That didn't fix it. Even right after a firmware upgrade or a factory reset, it won't let internet through until after several hours of being unplugged.
Maybe the router's firewall is getting confused? I recall working on a customer's computer that had its firewall set to "lockdown" which made it seem as if the internet wasn't even there.
As for replacing it, I did that several months ago, but now I'm switching back to the old one 'cuz my netgear can't do WDS, which I need to get my airport express running on the network (yeah, it's a goofy network). At this point, the problem is an annoyance: I can get around it by waiting half a day. It's an annoyance I'd like to fix if possible, though. Preferably without having to go buy another router (last time I tried to replace it, I bought a piece of crap without WDS).
