This isn't really a Windows Server question but I will be running Windows Server on my network. I ordered a server with only a single NIC. I want to run the internet connection through my server before it goes to the router. I am planning on using a USB/Ethernet adapter to accomplish this by connecting the internet router through my system NIC. Then connecting the adapter to connect to the system router. Will this work?

My first question is WHY would you want to run the internet connection through this Server box first? It sounds like this will be used at your home, correct? Is it set up as a domain controller or simply as a file server or stand alone PC? If its being used as file server or stand alone PC, it'd be better to have the router connected to the internet connection first, as the router will have a built-in hardware firewall. Additionally, if you have any other PC's connected to the router, if you set it up the way you want (which would work), the internet connection will be solely dependent upon the server box being on. i.e. if you have the server box turned off, that would prevent the internet connection from reaching the router in the configuration you want. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Hey Jedi Master! Thanks for the reply. (I'm a SW fan too but I tend to lean toward the dark side of the force) This is for a home network. I wanted to run the connection through the server so that I could monitor and limit web traffic from my kids. Is it possible to do this by connecting my server to the router the same as the clients?

Windows Vista includes Parental Controls that can help monitor your kids. XP includes some controls, but there are third party applications that may be better. You'd have to set up your network as a true client/server network, and have Server 2003 as a Domain Controller (an explanation on how to do that is beyond the scope and space here) in order to monitor all of the computers website traffic. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
