I have very limited knowledge about computers, especially installing an O.S. I have two sisters with MD and on very limited budget. A friend of theirs built them a computer about 5 years ago for 100.00 and installed an illegal copy of XP Pro on it. Recently the computer crashed and it appears to be a hard drive. I had an extra one laying around and offered to try to fix their computer for them. I have put the used drive in it and inso discovered that their "friend" used old junk to put this machine together for them. They can't afford a new machine and my income is also tight, but I want to fix it for them. Anyway, I put in the extra drive I had and installed windows 98 to see if it would run OK or if there was another problem. So far it seems to be working. I would like to put xp home or pro on it for them, but I can't afford the 80-100.00 to buy a retail version for them. I've seen OEM versions advertised for 30-50.00 but when I google it, it says these are "married" to the computer they came with, but then I read there is also an OEM System Builder version? Would a system builder version be what I'm looking for? Will one of these install an any computer? I sure could use some advise on this. Thank you. Nope...system builder versions from builders such as Dell and Gateway will only work on their systems. You can maybe find a true OEM version on EBay. Beyond that, using an illegal copy can land you in jail or fine, or both. The difficult part will be determining which drivers to obtain for the various components. Having seen some of these systems, they can be a nightmare to figure out who the manufacturer is of a video or sound card. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Thank you. I may just have to leave 98 on it for them if I can find all of the drivers. The darn mb is not marked. It's red and the north bridge is a pc400 and the southbridge is a v8233. I can't even get an FCC number off of it. Thanks again for your advise. ---------------------------------------------- Glen

If Win98 is on there, you can go to Control Panel, System (I think that's what it was back on 98) and Device Manager - it should list the make and model of the graphics card, soundcard, NIC, etc. Write 'em down and then do a search for the drivers. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
