First, never...NEVER unplug an external hard drive, USB flash drive, etc. when data is writing to it. There's a good chance that the file structure of this disk has been compromised. the only real fix would be to reformat the disk. Check to see if the manufacturer provides any utilities or programs. Second, when Vista updates are installing, make sure that's the only thing that's running. To fix the other USB issues, you can try doing a restore.
