Go to Start/Control Panel/System and click on the Hardware tab. Click on the Device Manager button, and scroll down to Sound. You'll probably find one or more hardware items with a yellow exclamation point on them. Right click and choose Delete.
Restart your computer and let XP find the drivers via the internet automatically.

Hi,
I bought a used pc recently and found an issue very similar to above, that my sound was not working.
No-name pc.
From “System Properties,”
-Microsoft Windows XP Pro
-Version 2002
-Service Pack 3
-Pentium 4HT 3.00 GHz
-512Mb of Ram
From “Aida32,”
-CPU Type: Intel Pentium 4HT, 3000 MHz
-Motherboard: Intel La Crosse D865GLC
-MoBo Chipset: Intel Springdale-G i865G
-Video Card:GeForce FX 5200 (128)
-Audio: (Multimedia) Creative EMU10K1 SB Live Audio Processor
Under computer name; nothing but “mini_pc.”
The sound card is a “Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1,” model #SB0220.
Under DevMan,
I found an error designating that the “Multimedia Audio Controller” did not have drivers installed on it. Tried to search internet and could not find driver.
-I uninstalled the device and restarted the pc, made sure that the software would search the internet, attempted to reinstall the drivers, and the pc did not find any drivers for it.
-I found and ran Realtek AC97 Audio A4.06 software for the pc, installed this software and restarted, but it did not install the drivers for the “Multimedia Audio Controller.” I still had the error.
-I found the SoundMax Audio Driver for this MoBo from Intel, ran this software, and this could not complete, signifying that the driver was not found, to restart and run setup again, which I did and achieved the the same results twice.
Dev Man showed, under “Sound, Video, and game Controllers,” that all the Creative drivers and codecs were installed and ok.
Tried to find the drivers for my sound card from Creative, but had no luck in finding the right one.
Each software I tried informs me that it did not detect the Sound Blaster Audio card.
In the BIOS, the Audio was disabled. I tried to able this, but it did not change anything. I know that this was disabled to be able to use the SB Live card, but I tried any way. I wasn’t able to get sound from the onboard sound, because of course, no drivers were installed on the “Multimedia Audio Controller.”
Any one have any other suggestions in which I can try?
Thanks,
Daljaxon
