Hey, just went over to my uncles house with SP2 on a CD to install it for him went ahead and did it everything went fine. Now every time I boot the cmputer I get the following BSOD.

Error - c0000135
The application failed to start up because winsrv was not found. The best solution to this problem is to reinstall the application.

I've searched myself on how to fix this error, so far all I have found are refferences to Windows 2000 with the same issue. I did find that experts-exchange had the answer but I have to pay for it. Microsoft's knowlege base doesn't have anything either. At least I know I'm not the only one, can anyone help me with finding out what the problem is?

Specs:
AMD Athlon 2500+
Soltek 75FRN2
Kingston DDR333 512MB
ASUS 9280 Ti4200
WD 120GB 8MB ATA/100

This is a legit copy, not that it would matter.

Please post suggestions/solutions.

Same thing happened to my daughter last night. She's running WinXP Home Edition and after installing SP2 - critical update as of last night, her system booted to the same blue screen error. If anyone was able to help you with this problem, please share the suggestings/advice with me. Thanks

STOP: c0000135 {Unable to Locate Component}
This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing
the application may fix this problem.

I just installed MWPro SP2 on a laptop and it seems to have flipped out the same way... blue screen of death plus the above message... Why has microsoft not responded to this?

Well I found a work-around that I just performed. JUST PERFORMED THIS SUCCESSFULLY AND THEN AFTER, SINCE IT WAS FINDING NEW HARDWARE I USED WINDOWS SYSTEM RESTORE AND WENT BACK TO THE POINT PRIOR TO THE INSTALL. CAUSE THE SYSTEM SEEMED TO BOOT SLOW.

PS> I found a site that said Celeron processors need a bios upgrade to work with XP SP2...anyway to remove SP2 try the following.
------------------------------THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS DO WORK-------------------------
Use Recovery Console
If you cannot successfully remove Windows XP SP2 by using one of the previous methods, follow these steps:

Insert the Windows XP startup disk into your floppy disk drive or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. When you receive the following message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD:

Press any key to boot from CD
Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or DVD drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD drive or DVD drive, see the documentation that came with your computer or contact the computer manufacturer.
When you receive the following message, press R to start the Recovery Console:

Welcome to Setup
Select your Windows XP installation. This installation is typically C:\Windows.
If you are prompted to type an administrator password, do so. If you do not have an administrator password, press ENTER.

At the command prompt, type cd $ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst, and then press ENTER.
Warning After you complete this step, you cannot stop the removal process.

At the command prompt, type batch spuninst.txt, and then press ENTER.
After the removal finishes, type exit, and then press ENTER.
Restart your computer.

Important When your computer restarts, Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) does not run, and you must follow these steps:

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to start Task Manager.
Click the Applications tab, and then click New Task.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs

Right-click ObjectName, click Modify, and then type LocalSystem in the Value String box.
Restart your computer

Use one of the previous methods to remove Windows XP SP2 from your computer.
For additional information about how to install and use the Recovery Console, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Fantastic.... Thanks for that... and for anyone else who comes across this looking for help, I think I'll post the strategy that I've been dealing with on the computers I manage and the networks I supervise:

Based on my experience, the problem may occur due to these factors.

1. The Winsrv.dll file or the Basesrv.dll file in C:\Windows\System32 is missing or is not updated during the installation of SP2.

2. The update KB824141 was installed.

3. The system registry is corrupted.

To troubleshoot this issue, we will uninstall SP2. Please note, since the computer cannot run properly, it is necessary for us to uninstall SP2 to resolve the issue. After the computer can run properly, we will remove the files that may lead to this problem and then reinstall SP2 again.

Please perform the following steps. The following steps are a little complicated, please read it carefully before you go any further.

1. First, disable any Anti-Virus programs and BIOS-level Anti-Virus protection.

2. Make sure you have set your CD-ROM as the first priority boot device. You may refer to your computer manual for information on how to do this.

3. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and reboot your computer.

4. When you see "Press any key to boot from CD" on the screen, press a key to let your computer boot from the Windows XP CD.

5. When the computer boots from the CD-ROM, it will check your hardware and then prompt you with the following options:

*To set up Windows XP now, press Enter.
*To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
*To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

6. Press the R key to start the Recovery Console.

7. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.

8. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password, and then press Enter.(If you didn't set a password, just leave it blank.)

9. At the command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each line:

CD $NTServicePackUninstall$\SPUNINST

BATCH SPUNINST.TXT

EXIT

10. After restarting the computer, if the system boots successfully, please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Note: If the computer does not boot successfully after using spuninst.txt, please edit the registry in Safe Mode:

a. Restart the computer.

B. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

C. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.
(Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary.)

d. Type in "REGEDIT" and navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs

e. On the right Pane, right click on "ObjectName" and click Modify, change the Value Data box to "LocalSystem", and then click OK.

11. Restart the system, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall "824141".

12. Restart the system again and try to reinstall Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Good Luck and Let me know if can help in any other way.

Hey everyone that has been had by the infamous XP SP2
I have tried your entire fixes but I have a special problem. I evidently put in an administrator password but have no clue as to what it may be. I have tried every password that I have ever used but to no avail ..any thoughts on how I might bypass this without having to reinstall XP and lose my entire My Documents file which is pretty large. I am trying to perform these steps but it asks me for an Admin password which I know is BLANK and it keeps telling me it is invalid. What sucks is there are only 3 attempts until it locks down. Not sure how to reset the password, or if the registry is screwed up.
This is not looking good. Hope I do not have to reload XP SP1 from scratch.... ouch

It may be your processor. Please check this link - seems that a bios flash update is needed on the following:

I saw a post at Microsoft's message board that said if you find a Linux boot disk on the internet it can reset the admin password on NT and XP windows systems.

Check all posts at this site. I'm not sure what to tell you but from what I'm seeing you need it. If your system is a compaq, you should be able to go to Compaq's site and order (for the price of S&H all restore cd's) but you have to go to downloads and enter your system's serial number to get it.

All Microsoft MVP tech's are answering this particular error at the following url:

I also had the WINSRV issue upon installing XP SP2. I was able to to restore most of
system through recovery panel. Some instability, slow startups. I reloaded SP1 with
some improvement, but have lost my wireless connection. A Linksys WUSB54G. XP fails to recognize it. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling with same result. When you click on the "setup.exe" file in the directory, image on screen flashes for a split second and vanishes, using the install disk. The wireless was working without a hitch prior to the SP2 install. If anyone has a thought on this problem, please email me or post. Thanks.

I read that page so many times in the last day. I don't have any of the processsors listed. I am not sure if maybe my download of sp2 wasn't fully complete, so I am going to try and download the file manually (no through windoze update) and then install again. If it doesnt work this time, I'll just wait for m$ to fix it... hopefully soon, cause im tired of the update thing talking to me.

Check out this link. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=885523&product=windowsxpsp2

From what I have seen related to this issue it looks like you have spyware on your PC that is conflicting with XP SP2.

BSOD the Solution:

Did you install Service Pack 2? Are you now suffering from the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)?. Here is the solution. I have spent 4 days hunting down the cause of my machine crashing and have finally cracked it. Maybe other people have a different cause than mine so my solution may not work for everyone.

After installing SP2 I suffered many crashes. In particular the Screen would turn blue and display a message starting "Bad_Pool_Header". And ending with STOP: 0X000000019....

Then my four day hunt for the cause started.

BSOD Solution
Basically I found two causes of the BSOD.
Cause 1: Corrupted file or folder.
Cause 2: Microsoft Indexing Service

Possibly these two causes are linked.

Solution for Cause 1
Onen up Explore (right click the start button), and expand your directory tree, starting from the C: drive. Click on each folder in turn and see if any cause the BSOD to appear. If so, reboot, and simply attempt to copy the folder, and then delete it.

Solution for Cause No 2
Switch off Microsoft's indexing service. You can do this by clicking the start button, select "Run", then type "msconfig", then select the "Services" TAB, scroll down to the Indexing Service and Switch it off. Reboot your computer, and good luck - maybe it will work, It solved the problem for me.

At first I thought I must have a third party software or hardware conflicting with SP2, but even after I had disconnected the internet, switched off all items in the startup TAB of msconfig, was still getting the BSOD. I tried surface scans, chkdsk, scan disk etc all to no avail. I tried defragmenting the disk, but the frequent crashes may have made things worse.

I discovered the computer was now crashing after about 7.5 minutes of being switched on. It did not matter whether anyone logged in or not.

Finally I went to msconfig (Start Run, MSCONFIG) and switched off "process System.ini files, Load System files, Load Startup Items. And the comuter stopped crashing. So then I added the item back one by one until I discovered the Microsoft Corporation Indexing Service which was causing the crash. I switched it off and switched everything else back on and AT LAST... No more BSOD

Me too, and the answer scrolls like mad. I have a friend at MS who walked me thru the uninstall and we still couldn't get it out.

Damnit!

I have a sony vaio and when i try to do what you have said it is saying my windows system is on E: and the C: drive doesn't exist. This makes the SPUNINST.TXT file useless because all it's commands are pointing to the C: drive.
Does anyone Know why i haven't got a C drive showing?. BTW when it was working i had it partitioned with the system on C: and my data on D:

After uninstalling with the recovery console go into Windows control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall it there. Parts of it are still there.

SP2 is probably still showing up in add/remove programs. Please take a look and click Remove in that area to finish uninstalling the remainder of SP2.

Did you type the following line first to change directories?

CD $NTServicePackUninstall$\SPUNINST

BATCH SPUNINST.TXT

EXIT

Use the WinXP CD and boot with it. Follow the above directions. You do not need to switch drive letters to make this work. After typing in the admin password you type the below (PS> the CD stands for change directory):

CD $NTServicePackUninstall$\SPUNINST

BATCH SPUNINST.TXT

EXIT

I have the same problem. I cannot boot up and the recovery instructions do not help. Running batch spuninst.txt just produces lots of errors: "The system cannot find the file specified". No solution found yet.

A post that suggested a regedit in safe mode @ssumes that safe mode works. Booting up always hangs at mup.sys line.

Any help very appreciated.

I read all the articles I could possibly find and still nothing worked. Tried everything. Even tried reinstalling Windows as Repair, it would not allow me to. I didn't want to lose my previous documents, music files and application setups, so I got another hard drive and installed it as my master hard drive and made my previous hard drive my slave drive. Not difficult to do at all. I now can access my previous documents and lost nothing. This was the only solution I could come up. If you are wondering if after adding the new master hard drive if i installed SP2...no. I installed the rest of the updates but there is no way I'm going to go near SP2 at this time.

Hope this helps!

A plus too is the slave drive is essentially a safe storage vault for all the items you never want to lose in the future. This way if your master hard drive ever gets messed up, items stored on your slave drive will not be affected.

I just fixed this problem, followed the instructions in Microsoft knowledgebase article KB875350. The errors are normal. You may have to navigate to the correct directory one cd at a time. ie cd $ntservicepackuninstall$ (enter) cd spuninst (enter), then run the batch file.

This problem is caused by a third party program installed on your computer. See microsoft knowledgebase KB885523.

I just got this error tonight after installing SP2. I have tried everything and am stuck at the blue screen everytime. Any attempt to enter safe mode or go to a comman prompt to try the manual fix listed here already, sends me to the blue screen. I can't get into windows at all. I don't seem to have the winxp startup disk, so I am kinda stuck. How can I fix this? I have read several ways to fix this through patches, system restore, or just a simple uninstall... but if I can't get past this blue screen I am pretty much at a brick wall.

Use the WinXP CD and boot with it. Follow the above directions. You do not need to switch drive letters to make this work. After typing in the admin p@ssword you type the below (PS> the CD stands for change directory):

    CD $NTServicePackUninstall$\SPUNINST

    BATCH SPUNINST.TXT

Thanks for the instructions for escaping from the winsrv problem arising from loading SP2 online ... subsequently I installed it using a CD obtained from Microsoft and had no further problems.

    8. When you are prompted, type the Administrator p@ssword, and then press Enter.(If you didn't set a p@ssword, just leave it blank.)

It seems like I am in a mess. I was able to follow steps until 10 but when I restart I get the login page but cannot enter.
First time I had to enter a blank p@ssword with an app fromhttp://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntp@sswd/ . Then I was able to enter Recovery Console.
Each time I reset XP runs chkdsk on C(ntfs).

After installing SP2 I get the error Stop c0000135 winsrv not found. When I try to get to the Recovery console from the XP disc, I can not get that far. It goes into the windows setup, but never makes it to the menu selection for Recovery console. The message is 'A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Does anyone have advice?

Go back to my 8/25/2004 post, you will note that windows setup does begin and then prompts you. Follow those long instructions, it will get you into the recovery console.

I was also getting the winsvr error, but instead decided to try and reinstall win xp home. I used the win xp disk to let the setup try to "repair the corrupt version of windows" without using the recovery console. While it was trying to repair it, I got a com error during the reinstallation and when it was finished, the computer rebooted and now it doesnt even make it to the win xp loading screen, it just continuously reboots itself.
I am able to provide more specific information if needed, All I am looking for is suggestions on how to fix this problem without losing any data or formatting. Thanks In advance.

Your original WinXP install cd cannot repair the SP2 error because service pack 2 is larger than the original WinXP install. It is a complete system upgrade, larger than the original install. The entire Operating System was overhauled in the upgrade. You can try the recovery console this time but I'm not sure if it's still going to work after trying to repair it with the setup cd. But you can try. Worse case scenario, if you can't fix it with the recovery console please take your drive out and daisy it as a slave drive/secondary drive on another system. Browse to your drive and copy the data you need off and onto a cd-r/rw or onto the other hard drive for safe keeping. Then put your drive back into your pc and blow it up. That means reformat and re-install WinXP from scratch. Then load all original OEM software and hardware drivers prior to loading WinXP SP2. Go to microsoft's Technet site and download the full administrative copy of SP2 (larger file than the auto update file) and install it. But be warned, you can't have anything running in the taskbar but the sound icon when you install SP2. Very Important. It is the main reason why SP2 crashes. Then daisy the other drive you put your data on and copy your data back to your system. I hope this helps.

I also got this error tonight and since This threadput me on the right track I'd thought I'd chime in with something else I've found. Once I applied the fixes here i got an error about "permission denied" and SP2 would not finish.I found the following script that reset permissions. just cut and paste is and make is a cat file. If you do not have the regperm program just do a google for it and its prety easy to download.

hope this helps.

If you are prompted to type an administrator p@ssword, do so. If you do not have an administrator p@ssword, press ENTER.

It does work even with all the access denied and blank screens. Trust it when it fianlly gets to prompt. Microsoft warns in their directions that the erorrs will occur and are normal.

I also have this problem. I receive this winsrv error, after switching my pc off by "Forced Shutdown" mode, after it has refused to start. My pc comes with OEM-installed operating system. I could therefore not use all the remedies provided since I don't have the Windows XP CD. I tried restarting my pc in save mode, Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) but all these has failed!

Could anyone help?

If you are prompted to type an administrator p@ssword, do so. If you do not have an administrator p@ssword, press ENTER.

The application failed to start up because winsrv was not found. The best solution to this problem is to reinstall the application.

I've searched myself on how to fix this error, so far all I have found are refferences to Windows 2000 with the same issue. I did find that experts-exchange had the answer but I have to pay for it. Microsoft's knowlege base doesn't have anything either. At least I know I'm not the only one, can anyone help me with finding out what the problem is?

    AMD Athlon 2500+
    Soltek 75FRN2
    Kingston DDR333 512MB
    ASUS 9280 Ti4200
    WD 120GB 8MB ATA/100

This is a legit copy, not that it would matter.

    Hi William!
The best thing to do with your computer is to reinstall the OS with Sp2. You can reinstall your OS under repair mode. reinstall your OS in repair mode by pressing "R", by doing this, all your files won't change and keep intact. DO NOT REINSTALL WITH FRESH COPY OF WINDOWS OR ELSE ALL YOUR FILES WILL BE DELETED. Hope this helps...EmoticonEmoticonEmoticonEmoticonEmoticonEmoticon

Ok.
I have tried every SP2 Removal trick.
I cannot get my comp to boot in safe mode, still.
Any more suggestions? It is a laptop, so booting the drive as a slave is rather hard, and I have some files I would really rather not lose.

I have the same problem.. I am at work..

I tried to install SP2 on another employees computer, but it gave me an "access denied" error then it proceeded to remove all the files from SP2 and then restarted. After that I got that blue screen of death with the unable to find winsrv.

I ran through the recovery process but! when i type "CD $NTServicePackUninstall$\SPUNINST" it says it can't find the file same with "batch spuninst.txt"

Anyone know why my the computer would say that the files don't exist? Also if infact the auto uninstall of SP2 suceeded and there are no files of SP2 left.. why would I still have this problem?
