[Hi .. I am not sure whether this will help or not but its worth given a try

The information in the article refers to:
Crystal Reports 9

Applies to:

Reported version only
Unicode runtime
Windows 9x/ME

Synopsis

The Crystal Reports (CR) 9 Developer Runtime Help (Runtime.chm) lists 'Unicows.dll' as a dependency file for the Report Designer Component (RDC) and Crystal Print Engine API.

What is 'Unicows.dll' and where can you find it?

Solution

'Unicows.dll' is the Unicode Layer DLL for Windows 9x and ME (Windows NT, 2000, and XP already provide Unicode support).

Unicode is a standard for representing characters as integers. Unicode uses 16 bits rather than the ASCII standard of 7 bits to enable more than 65,000 unique characters to be represented. As a result, languages such as Greek, Chinese, and Japanese are able to be supported.

Complete these steps to download and install 'unicows.dll':

1. Go to the Microsoft Download Center at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

2. In the 'Product / Technology' list, click either 'Windows 95', 'Windows 98', or 'Windows ME'.

3. In the 'Keywords' text box, type 'Unicode'.

4. Click the 'Go' button.

5. Click the 'Platform Software Development Kit Redistributable: Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95, 98, and Me Systems…' hyperlink, and follow the directions to download 'unicows.exe'.

6. When prompted for an installation directory, specify the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Crystal Decisions\2.0\bin

I tried rabee-nawash's solution and it did not work until I did a search for the unicows files that I had downloaded and moved them into the Messenger folder. Then Messenger loaded and started as normal.
My system is Windows XP Home.

Ive had the same problem with the unicows.dll not found message coming up and after searching for it and finding it in an AOL (eurrghh...) folder(???) i moved it to the msn folder. This seems to have cleared the original problem but now msn isnt working quite right. I use version 6.2 (with the plus plugin) and now some of the icons, my display pictures and some of the general layout is upside down.... Not a major problem in that msn is functioning, but rather annoying none the less.
Ive tried reinstalling msn and rebooting, run anitivirus software, spyware and banged my head against the wall a few times, all to no avail. Any nerds out there who can offer me some help ill be eternally greatful. Emoticon

Re: unicows.dll and Messenger screwups.
Note: Make sure your'e unicows file is in the msn folder, and if you don't have unicows.dll , see Rabee's advice for downloading it.

YAY! Problem solved Ladies!!! I had the exact same issue. Unicows.dll wasn't working, I moved it to my msn folder, and sure enough, everything worked but was all screwed up.

I talked to msn tech support and they fixed it totally.
Here is what you need to do:

1. Click start, and run %PROGRAMFILES%\MSN Messenger
2. In the list of files, click right-click MSNMSGR, and then click Properties.
3.In the Properties dialog box, click the Compatibility tab, and then clear the "Run this program in compatibility mode" box.
4.Click OK.
5.then start messenger and let out a big hoorah! Emoticon

Have you re-installed windows since you got this hardware? Windows made need a full restall after you upgrade it as your old motherboard drivers may not work with your new motherboard...

Hi Rabee so you're saying that this unicows.dll is to do with MSN Messenger? I have MSN Messenger version 7.5 and I am unable to sign in/connect to MSN Messenger and now after two weeks of this I now get this unicows.dll code. I will try the above and see what happens.

There may be corruptions in your registry. REGEDIT can be dangerous in the wrong hands, so here's what I suggest:

First, remove MSN messenger just like Rabee said.

Go to his suggested link and SAVE that unicows file in your MSNMESSENGER program file (C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger)

Download the latest version of MSN Messenger (I loaded 7.5), and save it to the same program file.

Now - Go to www.zdnet.com, to Downloads.
Under the "Utilities" section, search for a product called "REGVAC". It's free for 30 days and doesn't just fix the first few errors like many other trial products.

Download and install, and run in novice mode, just a click or two...

It will clean up nasty errors and corruptions in your registry

Now run the executable (unicows.exe) to load the unicows.dll file - when your system asks you WHERE - install it right there in the MSN Messenger program file.

Now run the executable to install MSN Messenger - after it installs, it will run it's own repair utility (and see your unicows.dll file)

It worked for me!

Emoticon

This worked for me! Another issue I had was when I downloaded the unicows.dll file I put it into programfiles/messenger. It's supposed to go into programfiles/msn messenger. That got messenger working again and clicking the compatibility tab fixed the upside down icon problem. Thanks alot Emoticon
