I cannot resize existing or add new partition. Using Partition Magic 8, all goes well until reboot to make changes. Changes fail with error 983 Too many Errors, but drive is fine. Running XP NTFS on Compaq Presario. Appears something on bootup does not allow changes but cannot find what. Any ideas??

Regards Phil...

try running chkdsk /f /r first then defrag the drive.
also see how much space your MFT is using,
if set to 25%
(a setting of 2 in the registry - NtfsMftZoneReservation) change it to 1 first.
reboot
now try to resize partitions

You could try running Partition Magic to resize the partition. Are you sure this particular NTFS partition is a dynamic volume?

Linux has a tool called ntfsresize made just for this, you can find it onhttp://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/

How do I find this NtfsMftZoneReservation? I'm using XP Home on a Presario R3000.
I've tried to use partition magic but keep getting the same error 983.

Use system tools to defrag the drive.

Next, activate chkdsk /f to check hard drive.

Reboot and run the Partition Manager to resize and create new partition for the newly available disk space for Linux installation.

HP/Compaq Laptops' hard drive apparently was configured with an unallocated "tiny" partition, size less than 8MB, and the exsistence of such partition disable PartitionMagic from doing what would have been a very common/simple task.

I wanted to install a second OS on my HP Laptop using PM80, and it repeatedly failed with 983 error. I didn't do a drive defragmentation, just a simple chkdsk /f did it all. One note: the system prompted that the drive is locked, and it'll be performed when the system restart the next time. Type "Y" when prompted with that question.

After chkdsk /f completed, restart system, then PM80 worked magically!!!

even i had tried to do that with partition magic 8/and pro but couldn't do. try using the older version '7'. i think it does . if not then might be some problem occured while partitioning the hard disk. esp. ntfs. i had one such experience.
try using aefdisk utility form Nagy Daniel. search for this on net.
its good and it works really well.

[I seem to have the same problem (on the same machine) as you have/had with you're Compaq Presario, did you have any luck in sorting out the problem? my machine is new so there should not be any problem that I can see. I would be grateful for any help./QUOTE]

I had the same problem (WinXp, PM8.0). One thing I noticed to help was to disable Automatic Protection from my Anti-virus SW (Norton Antivirus 2005). After this I was able to complete my partition operations without any problems. Just remember to use PM with care.

Cheers,

Hi,

I encountered the same problem and after I had performed chkdsk /R /R C: PartitionMagic 8 could resize the primsry partition.

Just to add another comment:

I had the same problem trying to convert a 100GB NTFS partition to FAT32.
Yes, i know, why would i do THAT: because an old DOS accountancy software (aarrgg) had to run on the laptop and it could not write onto the NTFS partition.

PM8 worked

PS: now that I'm writting I think I'd better resize the NTFS and add a small FAT32 partition dedicated to for this DOS software.

Anyway... thnx for the chkdsk /f hint!

Hi there,

Just found this site while at work! Don't know if anyone has given you the correct answer so here goes.
Partition magic should not be used on any OEM machine. The reason for this is there is a hidden partition for recovery purposes. This is what will be blocking any partition resize. If you do succeed in changing the partition saize and want to recover your machine then, in this case you will need to call HP/Compaq and buy the recovery media off them. This also applies to Packard Bells, Advents, eMachines, Sony's or any computer that doesn't have recovery media supplied with it.

Hope this helps Emoticon

1. go to Start->Run->CMD
2. type in chkdsk /f and say Yes Emoticon
3. Reboot your OS

After scan disk is done try partition magic again.

I am working on a dual boot partition machine. Once I resize my primary partition and accept changes. All is fine. Once I run ghost and attempt to place an image on that new created partition Ghost doesn't see it. It only sees the primary partition. The partition I created is not hidden any advice ?

Run chkdsk. After that, you will probably have another problem: Error 1513 Bad attribute position in file record. Go into symantec´s homepage and gett an update and a patch for your partition magic 8.0, follow the instructions install the update and the patch.
