I had the same problem. I tried the solution that worked for lucianu (unchecking ""Use Video alpha") but it was already unchecked for me.
The solution that worked for me was mentioned in a previous post: adjusting the feathering. If you look at the options for the select tool, it has a feathering setting. It w@sset to 250. When I changed it to 0, I could then select without the error.
