As with user ninewords (copied your start), whenever I'm booting up, I get a message that says that Windows have found new hardware (Primary IDE Channel). However, they won't install at all. The driver install from the device manager won't work, since windows says it doesn't recognize the IDE Channels (says they're not supported for my hardware).

Here's the device status message in device manager says:
_________________________________________________
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

You need to restart your computer before the changes you made to this device will take affect.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."
______________________________________________________________________

Every time I restart, it's still not installing / recognizing.

This happend after installing an ide DVD-rom on an Serial ATA enviroment! When I look in my Device Manager the Primary IDE Channel is already installed (for my SATA harddrives), and it seems that Windows is trying to install the same driver untop this driver. The strange thing is that my dvd rom perfect, besides the constant driver install procedyre...

Any suggestions anyone???!! I've tried removing the atapi.sys, but with none success..

I have Windows XP Pro SP1 installed!

Thank you all!!!

Have you tried to install like it asks, even though it is installed just going through with it might stop it. Your hard drives are Master/Slave not CS. Same with your DVD-ROM set to Master if only one and is master on that channel. Try driver rollback. Uninstall slave hard drive and reboot let Windows "refind" each of the two drives again seperately.

Do either of you have a TV card in your system or recently install one?

I reinstalled my system two days ago installed everything and everything w@ssweet, however I now receive the same problems with exactly the same IDE channel code 28 messages.

I use WindowsXP Pro sp1, an AMDXP 64 3000+, 6 harddrives (2 SATA, 2 on a IDE RAID card & 2 Normal Mainboard IDE Drives) and all show up and work fine, 1gig RAM of Memory and fairly high end graphics and audio cards.

The last thing I installed before this happened was Tweak XP 4. I confugured Tweak XP restarted and then I received the install IDE driver for Channel one, then I received a message to install a second IDE channel. Thinking it would help I did a system restore just before Tweak was installed but still received the same problem. In disk management everything seems fine. I still gotta do a few more tests.

I'm wandering if it could be something to do with my power supply it's a 450watt and adding the sixth HDD makes my system hang sometimes. I could possibly caining my system and overloading something. Or is that normal for XP for the type of CPU I use?

If I find something I'll write it here or any suggestions please, we'd love to know. Thankyou.EmoticonEmoticonEmoticon

This is weird I just recieved a power cut and all the electricity went down. My computer has an autostart so when the power came back on my system booted up. Witnessing this I noticed that the IDE channel installing crap has disappeared. I restarted my system and powered off twice and it's still not coming up. I'm cautious though things shouldn't appear then disappear for a reason I'll keep this in mind encase this arises again.

I'm wondering why this happened in the first place still. I don't recommened doing this but maybe if you pull the plug on the computer while it's powered up then turn it back on and see what happens. ''I take no responsibility if this damages anything and should any person do this, may do it at their own risk.'' Please post up anything if you do this and anything changes good or bad. Thanks.

You must uninstall Alcohol 120% and then it is ok.

Had a the same problem, but it was cause i uninstalled the primary ide controller driver from Device Manager. (That was cause my secodary HDD w@ssome reason, probably, a few reading failures in a row] set to PIO mode instead of DMA mode, which caused extreme cpu loads while doing nothing).

well back in business....
The solution that worked for me:
nothing seemed to work until, i downloaded a special (accelerated) driver for the ide controller for my motherboard chipset (VIA KT333). So, if you have a VIA chipset motherboard, you may try downloading this "special" driver from viaarena.com or, if you have a different chipset browse through the manufacturer website for somthing that might help.
