When I double click on any file to open, I get the busy icon and it takes long time (10-20 seconds) for the file to open. What is causing this delay. Didn't have this earlier.

I'm having the same problem, just experienced it recently...
I noticed when I right- or double-click a file the network icon in the bottom right corner flickers, what indicates the network is being used.

When I disconnect my computer in any way from the internet and disable all network adators the problem is gone.

Anyone suggestions?

We had this same problem. We found the problem to be that the computers that were affected were attempting to contact an IP address on our network. The IP address was that of the system we used to distribute out Ghost images using Symantec Ghost. The problem was that the system lost its network connection and nobody could communicate with the system. It took about 40 seconds to timeout and move on.

We discovered this by issuing a "netstat -a" command after causing the problem to appear (i.e. right-click a file and then run the command) and then discovered the IP address which led us to realize that the machines that were affected were cloned from the Ghost image system.

By fixing the network issue on the Ghost system, the problem went away on the other computers. We have not discovered why this communication is happening or if it is necessary or how to disable it but it appears this is the culprit.

For people having this issue in my computer when right clicking a drive, or opening the file menu.

I removed this Key, and all is better (make sure to backup your key's before removing, incase it was not the correct one)

I have been having this problem for some time now. I am running windows server 2003 with all workstations on windows xp. We are using roaming profiles and active directory. When you right click on anything it takes 10 seconds for the menu to open up. It seems to be primarily network files, but even local files lags sometimes. If you double click a document to open it, it takes 10-20 seconds to open, but if you already have a similar document open, for example a word doc, and then open another one from within word, it is instantaneous. This problem appears even for simple text docs with notepad.

I have the "automaticaly search for network folders and printers " unchecked and always have. I don't understand what i'm looking for in the netstat -a command. This topic is really old, but hopefully someone out there is still watching and could please help me.

I have the same problem and tried lots of things form removing registry entries for the context menu action of installed apps and also disabled the "automaticaly search for network folders and printers ". It speeded up things for some types of files, but for all the office, pdf, txt ones, it still takes up to 10 sec to display the menu...unless I previously right-clicked on a similar document.
Please HELP !

I believe it is definately a problem with all the windows xp workstations at the office. When I sit down at the server I have no lag with any files. When i sit down at the workstation and go into the C drive to open a local file, I still get the lag. Literally 10 second pause when I try to right click, or copy(ctrl+c) or open any type of file. I have unchecked Offline Files and automatically search for network folders and printers.

I cannot find anything else even close to this topic, PLEASE HELP US.

I found what make this on my computer.
As explain, when i right click i have 10 sec hang .. so during this time, exec netstat -a and find a line with a "SYN_SENT".
In my case it is a connection to an old share not available now ( 192.168.0.5 )

so look in registry to find all entry whith the old IP address not available a this time ...
In my case i found several key with "\\192.168.0.5\share\soft.exe %1"
Actualy y have no adaptater whith this network on .. so unable to contact the network address ..

i delette all and now its work fine ...

(personally this two tricks don't help me :
- uncheck the "automaticaly search for network folders and printers "
- deleting entry here [HKEY_CL@ssES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Format Shell]
)
good luck all ..

Right. I had a similar issue - when I used pretty much any of the menus, I'd have a horrible delay before the timeout and it would display the right-click context menu.

I used the netstat -a command to track down the IP it was looking for by comparing the output while I was having trouble and while I wasn't having trouble, and noticed an IP that was only available at home.

Then I searched the registry for that IP, but didn't find it anywhere that was relevant - but I did find it tied to the M: drive. So I looked through the registry for M:\ as well, and discovered that there was an application with keys that pointed at the M: drive.

So my thinking was that the smart right-click menu would look through the applications in the registry, and would always timeout when it tried to look at the one on the M: drive. I deleted the entry for that application (if I need it again I'll just install it locally) and all of my delays went away.

I found a different problem. I checked the System Log and found several references to DISK errors. This is not a good thing because it means you have bad disk sectors and the system is struggling through those rough spots. I ran the disk check utility and it found all sorts of bad sectors...bad news... the hard drive is on the verge of failure. I backed up all my data files and installed a new hard drive. Everything is super fast now....

I had a similar problem with file opens, in particular .jpg, .pdf files and .txt (or any extension @ssociated with my editor Editpad).
I used netstat -a 1 to refresh at one second intervals. I watched this while opening a file with NIC enabled, but there were no new connections shown by netstat, even though the network icon in the system tray was flashing. The files take about 10 seconds to open, but there is no delay when NIC disabled.
Downloaded PlasticSniffer fromhttp://www.plasticwater.com/PlasticSniffer
While opening .txt files, I saw about a dozen or so of the following entry in the sniffer log

---9/11/2006 11:08 AM---
Origination: 10.0.0.13:137
Destination: 10.255.255.255:137
Protocol: UDP
---START---
: EOEFFEFGEJFDFEEBCACACACACACACAAA
---END---

UDP port 137 as I understand it is a Netbios call from the failing machine (10.0.0.13). Maybe a broadcast?
When opening a .txt file I saw the same, but also a few of the following exchanges

---9/11/2006 11:05 AM---
Origination: 10.0.0.13:1030
Destination: 10.0.0.138:53
Protocol: UDP
---START---
5 * I Netvista ibm com
---END---
---9/11/2006 11:05 AM---
Origination: 10.0.0.138:53
Destination: 10.0.0.13:1030
Protocol: UDP
---START---
5 jfV I Netvista ibm com ibm com X - ns watson " dnstech us "w : X
---END---

This gave me the clue I needed.
netvista is the name of another machine on the local network. Searched through the registry for 'netvista' and found there were entries under Editpad pointing to that machine. Removed these and now both .txt AND .pdf AND .jpg files open without delay so it looks fixed in my case.

I need some help, I am currently experiencing this same slow response on right click. Or whenever i open a .txt file in notepade. I ran netstat -a and found that my computer indeed is trying to establish a connection with one my other machines on the network. I have no idea why i would be trying to do this, all of my programs are installed locally on this computer and the context menu after a right click has nothing involving the network on it. Anyway i searched through the registry for the IP address of my other computer and could not find it. I then searched for everything dealing with Notpade and found nothing out of the ordinary. Ive searhed all over the registry and feel like im so close to fixing this but i have no idea what to do next. Please some help me or give me some guidance. Thank you so much.

I have the same problem @sstrlFan. i cannot find a solution to this problem. my network icon flashes when i acces files or right click them. however i get bothing on netstat and nothing with plasticsniffer.
disabling my connection does solve the problem, so i can only @ssume it is trying to connect to another computer that is on the network

I tried everything listed in the forum and i already had disconnected the network drive for printers and faxes. As i mentioned above i ran the netstat -a during the lag and did notice the SYN_SENT line, my computer was attempting to connect to one of my other computers on my network. I searched through the registry but couldnt find anything relavent with that IP. Im not really sure where to go from there? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

yes i have gone through the thread. ragulRocks i tried that and i have disconnected network drive for printers.
it is trying to connect to the 1 other computer on my home network, which is broken and not turned on at the moment. would this make a difference, because it cant connect to it?
this still shouldnt make a difference i would expect.or else every one in every network should get this problem when 1 comp is turned off.

Hello,

I have this problem too but all solutions metioned bedfore did not help me.

When I open any document bij clicking on it in the explorer or desktop, I have to wait about 10 seconds. I installed the PlasticSniffer and find a response like mentioned, but I found no regognizable devices that may cause this problem:

I've had same problem for months, opening files by double-click had up to 1 minute delay but opening from application was instant.
Solution I found was to recreate user.
ie create new user, copy all email, favourites, desktop, address book etc to new user
delete old user with delete files options.
reboot.. create new user with old name and copy back all files/links.

Worked for me. No delays any more

Guys,
I have joined this forum because I my be able to help some of you with this issue.
Your page sure helped me fix my issue.

I was getting a 30-40s delay when trying to open jpgs, avi's, zips, rars etc.
Right clicking on those files or trying to delete them caused the same delays.

Unpluggin the network cable solved the problem so I knew it was network related.

So frustrating and I was hours looking at the fix. Then I came across this page and one of the posts shone a light on the solution... here was mine...

I used to have a lot of network shares on my pc and through one of them I ran (and installed) a program called DAMN iNFO viewer. This program has no installer. You just double click it and it @ssociates itself with the .nfo filetype.
Now that particular network share no longer exists and it seems that if I was to open an nfo file it would need that link.
So Im not sure how this works but clearly when I tried to open pics, avi's, zips etc. the fact the program for the nfo filetype wasnt on the network anymore caused the delay.
Also right-clicking on the files caused the same delay because the link to the program no longer existed (although why is beyond me).

So.... I went into regedit and searched for "192.168.0.2" which was the ip of the computer that no longer exists. It was at that point I found entries for DAMN iNFO viewer and then the little lightbulb in my head came on. It had to be that.
I removed all references to it in the registry.

As I still wanted the program, I dragged its icon to my C: drive and ran it from there so it could re-@ssociate itself with its filetype etc..

NOw all is fine, fast and no delays.

I really hope this helps. Look for a program in your filetypes that maybe opens on a network drive or network share or even one in your context menu.
For me it w@ssimply down to the fact that Windows (for some reason) needed to look for the nfo viewer when I click on zip files etc. I guess maybe it scans throught the filetypes to find what program to open your file with. I dunno.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will have to look through things a little more thorougly but of the top of my head I am almost posotive everything is installed locally on the machine with the problem. All the options in the right click context menu are default and on that machine. But i will deff. have to go back and check again, excellent suggestion, thank you.

Hello F1 Racer,

Your story let me search my Registry on the name of my former PC and BINGO, I found several hits!!!

I really don't know how they get there but it worked fantastic!!

It has annoyed me for at least 4 months since I bought my new PC with dual processor etcetera but slower than my old PC because of this. So thank you very much for this helping hand. In future I will look to this forum quicker!

Thanks!

Hi All,
I m very greatful to F1Racer who gave very good explanation to overcome this problem.
The problem was to me becaz of TextPad. My office adminstrator installed Textpad from his System in the network. he didnt copy and install. also i used to open .txt files in Textpad. So whenever i right click a file, it refers the installed system of Textpad in the network. so there was a late. I overcome this problem by the ideas of F1Racer.

We can do this by anyone of two ideas.

First try with the foll first idea. if this didnt solve the problem,do both ideas.

Idea 1
------------

In the foll site go through Method 2 and do the steps as explained (download & run ShellExView)

Method 2 - Using ShellExView to determine the Context-menu causing the problem
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

Idea 2
--------

If the first idea doesnt work out, do both first & second idea. U will solve the problem.

1. Type netstat -a in Command Prompt ( Start menu --> Run--> Type cmd--> Prompt will open)
2. Check for ips or other system names( like zsw002) in the list.
3. Type regedit in command prompt
4. Search for the Ip or name(zsw002) by pressing Ctrl+F
5. List will appear of programs u downloaded or installed from that system.
6. Delete that item from the list ( be careful while delete. make sure that u delete installed file such as textpad, notepad)
7. Make sure that what u deleted, if its there in ShellExView, should be disabled

U need not do anyother things. u try this with hope.

All the best.

Regards,
Reena.

I have the same problem on all accounts on this PC. The netstat -a result when the problem is present states:
TCP POG_SPEC_3:1041 10.66.185.58:microsoft-ds SYN_SENT
TCP POG_SPEC_3:1042 10.66.185.58:netbios-ssn SYN_SENT

I cannot ping 10.66.185.58. And I cannot find any references to that IP anywhere in the registry - or even in any files on the PC. Any Emoticonother ideas out there???EmoticonEmoticonEmoticon

Any takers?

I'm trying (fruitlessly) to figure this out. The closest I've seen is references to problems with Symantec Antivirus (corporat standard at my company) that apparently cause this. The only recommended solution I've seen is to uninstall SAV which is unacceptable in this setting. Is there a way to fix this problem?

Thanks,

It sounds like there are a few different problems going on throughout this thread. Thanks to our IT consultant, we fixed this in our office yesterday. The problem was that there were references in the registry to computers that were no longer on the network.

One of the ways to test if your problem is similar is to disable the network card. If your delay in opening files goes away, it could have to do with an invalid registry entry. So the first step would be to search the registry for entries of any computer names that no longer exist on the network. The entry will look like this: \\graphicscomputer\share\public folder or something. It's located under a key structure like "Shell -> Open -> Command". If you can't think of any computers or locations that are no longer on the network, you can also search for "\\". You will want to back up the registry key (by exporting it) before deleting it. Delete it, then check if the problem is fixed. Otherwise, restore the key. Only entries that reference network locations are likely culprits, so avoid anything that references your local drives. Obviously, edit the registry at your own risk.

That's all I can offer on this topic, hope it helps someone.

Peter

We have recently had this issue. It turned out that disabling the NIC did allow files to open with no problem. Obviously the system was trying to get out to the network when it could, but why. Only happened to MS Office files. So obviously it is related to this suite.

Why would Office be trying to get out to the network?
Looking for install files after a recent patch. They had been moved from the network and were no longer available.

So this was the problem in our case ... not sure if it helps, but the forum was quite helpful and I wanted to give something back.

I had this problem.

In a DOS shell, running "net use" displayed defunct mapped drive letters to systems that were down or gone.

I Could not use "net user /delete \\hostname\sharename" to remove them. Just got an error.

What I did was regedit and remove the offending mapped drive letter keys under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Network

Then rebooted.

I am having the same issue as most of the other postings. When I double click on a file, it takes a good 30 seconds to open the program (ie. Microsoft Word) then another 10 or so seconds to open the actual file. I have copied a file from my network to my desktop for testing to eliminate the network drive. If I unplug my network cable from my local pc, the files open immediately. I have tried to run the netstat -a 1, but don't really know what to look for. The "State" shows all of the TCP's listed as "Listening" or "Established". Any suggestions? By the way, I set up my 2 PC network at home before bringing it to the office and it seemed to work fine before bringing it to the office. Both of the PCs have the same issue.
