I just can't figure this one out, and I have been at it for a good 4-5 hours now. PLEASE, help me.

I am running Windows XP. 1ghz t-bird, Radeon 9500 Pro, 512mb ram.

Last night I left my computer running so that it could download numerous large files in peace... and when I returned my PC had gone haywire.

Whenever I try to start my computer, a blue screen pops up right after the windows loading screen.

It states:

"STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x03020100, 0xF85D4550, 0x00000000)"

Then it does the usual blue screen memory dumping and restarts.

So far I have tried an incredibly large variety of solutions and it's just killing me.
1. I have not installed anything since I have last successfully booted. So it rules out the fact that driver or program installations have led to this.
2. I have not changed anything since the last successful boot.
3. Scan disk is fine with all drives.
4. Switching around memory sticks does nothing. Can have both or either one and my computer still crashes.
5. Shadowing is off in BIOS...
6. Changing the frequency or timings of my memory does nothing.
7. ALL that has happened right up to the point that the computer went crazy w@ssome downloads, as far as I know. I was not at home when it went crazy, so am not quite sure as to what is wrong...

The 0x0000008e stands for: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
The 0xC0000005 stands for some access violation error.
The 0x03020100 means BYTE_ORDER_LITTLE
The 0xF85D4550 I can't find a meaning for...

t refuses to restore the system to a previous state
First it says there is not 200mb on C: although there was ~600 and secondly if it did realise there is space it states that System Restore cannot protect the computer and it can't be run.

Also, some new information is that from the event viewer I can see that each time I try start the computer this happens:

"Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206"

and

"The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp."

I am sooooo stumped.

Thanks for the help...

Yikes... Can you advise what you were trying to download? Also, are you running a hardware and/or software firewall?

First - good jot at doing your homework. The first STOP error indicates possible RAM problems. About the only way to check that is to have the RAM tested.

First option is to check to see if replacing the RAM solves the problem. You might want to take the RAM to a local computer store that has the ability to test it. If it tests ok, on to the next step. If not, replace it.

Beyond the above, it almost sounds like either a website or some program ran malicious code that ate the registry alive. This is becoming more prevalent. About your only option is to do a clean install, and make sure you have Spybot and Adaware installed.

FWIW, MS's Antispyware (beta) isn't bad. I've had it catch several sites trying to plant code.

Thanks for the help mate.

I really can't figure out any other reason for my computer going haywire besides some sort of malicious code appearing on my harddrive... I mean really.
There is no reason why during downloading my hardware would fail. It just has to be something that came along with the files... I do have a firewall though, but then again no antivirus software at the time that would automatically scan a file that was recently downloaded.
I don't think there is anything I could use to check for viruses or spyware in safe mode, or is there?

I can enter safe mode, but it just will not run in normal mode. Very strange.

I uninstalled the floppy disk controller from device manager and my ATI display drivers... guess what?
The whole PC works. Don't know which was the problem but it's all dandy now!
Thanks for all the help!

your problem is one frequently encountered. When you left your computer on downloading it will have also created thousands of files which when they gatrher will cause your computer to go into a state of shock this will cause the RAM(random access mem) to go haywire because it wont know who wants what info.If you can stary in safe mode i would simply back up your files + reboot

It was likely the display drivers. I'd know for sure if I had a copy of your MEMORY.DMP file.

What happens is the drivers get corrupted/munched, sometimes for no reason anyone can tell, and then you end up with freezes, crashes, logon problems and the BSOD stop errors. Which can be completely cryptic. Yours may or may not have been an infinite loop problem. I'm thinking is. Just because I've seen this situation before. With some of the same log events. You should look for an entry for ATI2mtag or one with an ID of 108 in the system event logs.

At any rate, it wasn't because you left your computer on to download, that I know for sure. Someone has been spending too much time on PIOMA.com

If you run across problems like this in the future a good place to go to learn how to troubleshoot stop errors is:http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php

Some of it is a little esoteric but most of it is helpful and certainly better than digging around in MS knowledge base and coming up with 50 zillion almost but not quite right solutions.

Also, if you run into this again and it has the same error messages but uninstalling your drivers and reinstalling them doesn't work here is a nifty little tool:http://www.drivercleaner.net/dc.htm

What that does is either completely uninstall your video drivers and clean up your cab files or clean up the bits that persist after you uninstall the drivers some other way so that you can do a truly clean reinstall. It is quick, brutal and effective.

Why, yes, I do know what I'm talking about.
