Can anyone tell me how to permanently turn the status bar on in IE 6. Every time I start it or open a new window the status bar is gone.

I can add it to the current window using View->Status Bar, and it appears, but if I open a new window its gone

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

[Edit: Problem sorted!!]

[2nd Edit: When I say sorted, I mean that i can get IE to show the status bar when i create a new instance of a window by clicking the IE Icon, or by opening a link in a new window, but not when selecting File->New->Window and this is what I need help on]

Hello, >> Go into Windows Explorer, enable the status bar, then go into the folder options and click the button that makes all folders look like the current one. Then reopen explorer.

tomxp123 -- you don't get it. He didn't say WINDOWS EXPLORER, he said INTERNET EXPLORER. And I have the same annoying problem with IE6 and XP Pro. I change my INTERNET EXPLORER view to include the status bar several times a day. Every time I look again, it's gone.

Similarly, I have three rows of icons and menus at the top of my INTERNET EXPLORER window -- exactly the way I want them. I even LOCK the toolbar. Once a day or so they expand to 4 rows. I then have to unlock the toolbar, move the offending tools back onto the row they belong, and relock the toolbar. Any suggestions?

Tomxp is right, though. I had the same problem, and doing that in Windows Explorer fixed it in Internet Explorer...

If you are like me, and annoyed that Microsoft has decided to make your status bar optional (so it disappears whenever you open a new IE 6 browser window), here's what you do to enable it permanently:

Print these instructions before starting.

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar
2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbars"
3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
4) Right click on the Start Button to open Windows Explorer, click View, select: Status Bar
5) Right-click on Explorer's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
6) Click Tools | Folder Options | View tab
7) Click the "Apply to all folders" button. (Click OK if this gives you another dialogue question)
8) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
9) Reopen IE to any page, right-click on a link and select: "Open in New Window" The Status Bar should remain visible.
10)Click on the Start Button, select RUN, and type REGEDIT

11) Verify that these Registry entries exist:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

I have the above symptoms quite often and I correct it by following the instrcutions posted here. I KNOW that I do not swicth it off. I suspect that scripts on web sites surpress it when they wish to prevent you from seeing where you are being redirected to. How can I 'lock' the status bar so that even scripts on web sites cannot switch it off?

>'lock' the status bar so that even scripts on web sites cannot switch it off?

try running regedit, going to the key mentioned above, and changing the permissions of the keys to read-only
to do this:

go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
select "Show_StatusBar"
go to 'Permissions...' from Edit menu
click 'Advanced'
find your user name in the list & click 'edit' button
put a check next to 'Set value' under 'Deny'
OK, OK, OK, OK.

now Internet Explorer won't be able to change the setting, even if it wants to!

I don't know if this actually works (having only come across this 'disappearing status bar' fix just now), but hopefully it'll do the job.

If still someone does'nt get it the whole thing goes as under:

Start with one instance of IE. Select View | Status Bar. Now press Ctrl while clicking the X in the upper-right-hand corner of the window to close the application. Next, open My Computer and select View | Status Bar. Finally, go to Tools | Folder Options and select the View tab. Click Apply to all folders, confirm the dialog, and then close Windows Explorer.

NOW ...... start regedit (Run > regedit )

go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
select "Show_StatusBar"
go to 'Permissions...' from Edit menu
click 'Advanced'
find your user name in the list & click 'edit' button
put a check next to 'Set value' under 'Deny'

Now even Larry Ellison Emoticon canno't turn it off....

Bill Gates is God to me. So if this comes handy and ya wanna thank me,
buy Microsoft products and lets all pray that the company which gave us
Windows does'nt get sued around by a bunch of loosers !

I'm like you, and annoyed. I've been able to get the status bar to show on my computers with just a few clicks, however. I've just:

(1) Opened a SINGLE Internet Explorer window (and to make sure, close any other Explorer windows, Windows, IE, or otherwise)
(2) Right click on the Toolbars, make sure that the toolbars are NOT locked
(3) Click View -> Status Bar
(4) Right Click on the Toolbars, go ahead and now LOCK the toolbars

Just to be safe, just close IE and re-open it. I've always had the toolbars show up after that. Hope that helps

What a lame ass Microsoft supporter... 1. Learn to spell. 2. Other operating systems CAN do it and they do it a hell of a lot better. Microsoft users are too accustomed to constant bugs in Windows. Hey, my computer is constantly crashing. I'll just restart and hope everything fixes itself. Wait, I have a better idea; I'll reformat for the millionth time. If it wasn't for the other operating systems in the world, the Internet wouldn't be what it is today. The Internet is built upon those other operating systems that "could'nt do it". If the Internet was built upon IIS servers... oh my God, that's really scary to think about. An 0-day DCOM exploit or Code Red worm would completely wipe out the whole entire Internet. Look at server statistics and notice how *nix and BSD (and others) don't need to constantly be restarted, in fact, they stay up for YEARS at a time. Not to mention the security advantages of the "other" operating systems, as long as you have a competent administrator.

Down boy, Down!

Sounds like a bit of paranoia happenning here. If you're so against MicroSloth then what are you doing perusing a thread about IE 6.0? I, on the other hand, believe MickeySoft has done a remarkable job of bringing computing to the m@sses. And so has Apple. And Linux, BSD, UNIX, the list goes on. I should throw Commodore in there as well. I AM a network Admin and I work comfortably in almost everything. There is a place for every OS and every OS has it's place. Now please take your rhetoric and your flaming elsewhere. He may not spell so well but at least he's courteous. Which puts him much higher in my esteem than yourself.

Open only 1 instance of IE6. Now choose IE to show statusbar. Instead of closing the window from the red x in top right, go File -> Close, IE6 then saves your new settings(sama thing in windows explorer), and even more new windows size can also be modified doing so. Try it and post a feedback.

I have the same annoying problem. But I still can't solve it. I've followed these steps:

    QUOTE:

    "Show_StatusBar"="yes"
    "Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

One note though, on step 11 in my system "Show_StatusBar"="no". I changed it to "yes" and still the status bar won't show. I checked the registry again only to find out that "Show_StatusBar"="no" again. I tried and tried and still it would go back to "no".

So I tried fiddling with the Edit > Permissions of the registry to deny "set vale" permission". Still nothing.

help. Emoticon

I've managed to deny permission to change the value of "Show_StatusBar" from "yes" to "no". Moments later, IE freezes and I can't open another IE window.

reset.

I think something's trying to keep the statusbar hidden for some reason. Spyware, I think. Any thoughts? Shed some light, please. Emoticon

I have the exact same problem as everyone on here. I've tried all the solutions and they still fail. I do believe that something is tryin to keep the status bar hidden. When I manually reset the status bar back, i noticed that all my activity goes through a url that looks like "ads345...". I did some research on ads345 it seems to be a common problem for many and deleting its corresponding "MidaDDle" software doesnt' do jack either. I am pist off with this friggin thing and i still can't find a solution. Somebody please help us, there doesn't seem to be any remedy!

i agree with everyone here that there doesn't really seem to be a solution to this problem. i've done everything suggested and followed all the steps: select the status bar, lock the toolbar, hold control and click the x/hold and go file close, open my computer/windows explorer, select status bar, lock toolbar, options, apply to all folders, and nothing! i've also gone into the registry and changed the value to yes and denied the set value, but nothing. i noticed tho, that when i would open IE that it would try to go to that ads345 page that someone else mentioned, so i ran ad-aware and found some of those "MidaDDle" files. once i delted those my status bar worked! ....until i restarted, then ran ad-aware again and had more of the files. there seems to be no easy solution to this, but if i have to run ad-aware everyday to keep my status bar up then i guess that's what i'll have to do. i love my status bar and i absolutely hate having to select it everytime i start IE Emoticon, so if anyone has any suggestions i'm sure we'd all appreciate it, good luck everyone, thanks Emoticon

The first reponse which changes Folder Options in Windows Explorer solves the problem. Don't forget that Microsoft Integrated Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, a change in one affects the other. (Forget all these Registry changes.)
