If you don't want to upgrade to Active Directory at this time: add a member server (running Win2K) and install Exchange 5.5 in the same site as the existing server; switch the new server to act as the bridgehead server for the site; move the mailboxes over to the new server; you outlook clients should automatically switch over when they connect next time; once you have let it run in this environment and everything seems fine, shutdown the old exchange services for a week and make sure everything is still happy. If it is, you should be able to safely uninstall Exchange 5.5 from your PDC. If you want to upgrade to Active Directory, but stay at Exchange 5.5 for now: upgrade your PDC to Win2K; then upgrade your BDC; then add a member server and run dcpromo on it; then demote your original PDC/Exchange box to a member server. These are just two possible suggestions and may not be the best for what your needs are. Reply with more details about your current and desired operating environments and I can try and come up with something more specific, or email if thats easier: astorrs@acsconsulting.ca. Andrew

The SRVMAX.EXE to SETUP.EXE trick Andy mentions only applies to volume licensing discs (Select, Open, etc), so it may not apply to you. Basically perform a new installation of Windows 2000 and Exchange 5.5 into your existing NT4 domain following the article "Installing Exchange Server 5.5 on Windows 2000 Server" (http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/deployment/55/Upgrade2000qi.asp). Once you have completed those steps, verify you can see the new Exchange server in your old Exchange site. Move all the Connectors, Directory Replication, Mailboxes, Public Folders, etc over to the new server. Have all your email users log in once to their mailboxes to have Exchange automatically reconfigure their Outlook settings (may not work on Outlook versions prior to 2000, not sure) to point to the new server. Follow the steps Andy mentioned above in the "How to Remove the First Exchange Server in a Site" article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q152959). Shutdown the old Exchange services on the PDC and verify everything is still working correctly for all of your users; wait a few days to be sure. You should now be able to safely uninstall Exchange 5.5 from your PDC. This is a relatively straightforward transition, but like Andy said, make sure you have a complete (current) backup of your PDC before you begin. Good luck! [emote|:)] Andrew
