OK, apologies if it's a little vague, my head's swimming with network nonsense atm [emote|:)].
I've got a server that's got an external address that's referenced by a program I'm using (it uses it in a function somewhere based on what IP it's connecting to). The problem is that the program then tells the server what IP to use (the external one) and the server can't ping that IP as it's on its own internal network.
Normally to fix this I dual IP the NIC and add the external IP to the existing local one, however this brings down the network, or at least access to it (probably due to the external IP clashing with an entry on the router though I'm not sure).
What I want to know is, is there a way other than Dual-IPing the machine that I can get it to direct packets intended for the external address to itself as if the packets were being sent to the local address?
I've tried routing which obviously doesn't work as the address of the information is still the external one and naturally the hosts file will only work for stuff that it needs to resolve as opposed to straight IPs. There's something in the linux-side of my head that suggests Aliasing but I don't know much about it, nor whether it can even be done under Win2k.
Cheers for your time.
