My desktop in unable to connect to the internet. Previously, for the past 10-12 years the machine was connected via cable (Roadrunner). Now in Denver I am trying to use a Dynex wireless card to connect via wirless modem from QWest.
The modem and the Dynex card seem to be working ( I spent over 3 hours with tech support from each of these without resolution). However, I am still unable to connect to the Internet.
The Menu screen with the Dynex show that information is coming from the modem to the computer but nothing from the Internet.
Could Win2k being doing something to block this or is something interfering with the reception ?
One of the techs had me do a Run CMD, but a box came up saying that the file was in use. Not sure what this means or if it is relevent.
Help, I need that machine to work,
Thanks,
TK

Check your internet connection settings. I'd bet that your old ISP had specific DHCP or DNS settings. To check your current settings, bring up Command Prompt (start/programs/accessories/command prompt) and type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. This will show all of your connection settings.
From there, you'll be able to tell your new ISP what the current settings are, and they can walk you through how to change them.

Thanks Jedi, that sounds like something no one else asked me to do in the four plus hours tech support had me on the phone.
Hope it works, I will let you know'

I cannot get into command prompt, I get a box stating that another program is using that file.
How do I get around or find out what program is using the file ?

I went into the Network settings and through the TCP/IP protocol manually put in the settings. The icon I asked for on the panel now shows everything is working except nothing is being received, thus no contact with the net.
Suggestions please ...

Did your new ISP give you any particular settings that you have to have?

I went out and bought a Belkin then spent over an hour with Tech Support, finally everything works after manually setting the IP and all the other numbers and removing the p@ssword from my network. I must have talked to every Indian speaking Tech Support worker in the world.
Remaining question, how came I cannot get into Command prompt, every time I try I get a screen that says another program is using the file
